DAPHNE – The United States Sports University is proud to announce that it has become the first university in the United States to receive the international Ethos Universitas recognition from the PCU Committee of Panathlon International.
The historic recognition acknowledges USSU’s institutional commitment to academic integrity, ethical leadership, social responsibility, and the values of the Olympic Movement.
It also connects the University with an international community of institutions dedicated to advancing these principles through education, research, leadership, and community engagement.
University leadership formally announced the recognition during a press conference held on campus Tuesday, October 20.
USSU President and CEO Dr. Steve Condon, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Brandon Spradley, and Dr. Roch King, Council Chair of the Center for the Study of Olympic Sport & Culture (CSOSC) and Chair of Sport Coaching, were present for the announcement.
“The offer of membership into the Global Academic Community ‘Ethos Universitas’ is further acknowledgement of the respect USSU has gained in the international community of sports,” Condon said. “Being the first university in the United States to receive this invitation further distinguishes our profile in the global Olympic market. I am so proud of our faculty and staff. This is attributable to their hard work and our global sports research reputation. I am excited to see how this recognition and entry adds to our growth.”
Ethos Universitas is an international initiative of the PCU Committee of Panathlon International, an organization dedicated to promoting the cultural and ethical values of sport.
Founded in Venice, Italy, in 1951, Panathlon International was formally recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1982 for its commitment to advancing the principles of Olympism. Guided by its motto, Ludis Iungit, meaning “United by Sport,” the organization promotes friendship, solidarity, fair play, and ethical responsibility through sport and education.
The PCU Committee, formally established within Panathlon International in 2011, extends these principles into higher education through academic initiatives, international cooperation, and institutional recognition.
Through Ethos Universitas, universities voluntarily affirm their commitment to incorporating ethical principles and Olympic values into teaching, research, administration, and community engagement.
Unlike an accreditation or university ranking system, Ethos Universitas recognizes an institution’s commitment to upholding these values and encourages collaboration among universities worldwide.
In an official announcement published October 5, 2026, the PCU Committee confirmed USSU as the first university from the United States to join Ethos Universitas, marking the initiative’s expansion into American higher education. Since USSU’s recognition, Mount Saint Mary’s University has also joined the international initiative, reflecting its continued growth among American institutions.
The announcement also recognized the leadership of Dr. Condon and the involvement of Dr. Spradley and Dr. King in establishing the University’s international relationship. The PCU Committee welcomed USSU’s participation and expressed its commitment to developing a meaningful institutional relationship in the years ahead.
Founded in 1972, United States Sports University has spent more than five decades preparing future professionals and leaders in the sports industry through education, research, and service.
The University’s mission closely aligns with the three fundamental values of the Olympic Movement: excellence, respect, and friendship. These principles extend beyond athletic competition, shaping the way students learn, faculty teach, and future leaders prepare to serve their communities.
“This recognition is another important step forward in carrying out the mission of USSU. It reflects our commitment to academic integrity and ethical leadership,” Spradley said. “Our goal is not only to prepare students for successful careers in sports, but to develop future leaders who lead with integrity, make ethical decisions, and have a positive impact on the organizations and communities they serve. Being recognized by Ethos Universitas reinforces these values and our commitment to preparing the next generation of leaders in the sport industry.”
As the first institution in the United States to receive this recognition, USSU has a unique opportunity to introduce Ethos Universitas to American higher education and demonstrate how the principles of Olympism can influence not only sport, but also academic leadership, scholarship, and civic responsibility.
This international recognition further strengthens USSU’s connections with Panathlon International, the PCU Committee, and universities around the world that share a commitment to ethical leadership and social responsibility.
“This recognition is more than an acknowledgment of our University’s accomplishments. It is an affirmation of our responsibility to prepare future generations of leaders who recognize that excellence and integrity are inseparable,” Dr. King said. “As the first American university to receive Ethos Universitas recognition, United States Sports University is proud to advance the educational and ethical values of the Olympic Movement, both within sport and throughout society.”
Through continued education, research, and international cooperation, USSU looks forward to supporting initiatives that promote integrity, fair play, respect, and the broader educational values of the Olympic Movement.
For United States Sports University, the Ethos Universitas recognition represents both an important institutional milestone and a renewed commitment to preparing the next generation of coaches, educators, administrators, researchers, and leaders who understand that professional excellence and ethical responsibility go hand in hand.
