Primetime Primer: Daphne welcomes Fairhope for 38th meeting of Eastern Shore rivals

The Trojans and Pirates enter this region finale with matching records and plenty on the line.

Posted

For the 38th time in their longstanding football history, Daphne and Fairhope will do battle Friday night.

The Trojans will welcome their Eastern Shore counterparts to Jubilee Stadium with plenty at stake, as both sides enter this game at 6-2 overall and 5-0 in region play.

The visiting Pirates are fresh off a dominant home win over Davidson, while the hosting side is looking to bounce back from a one-point defeat at the hands of the aforementioned Vikings, which was Daphne’s first loss since August.

So fittingly, these rivals each stumbled once during non-region and regional play, creating a highly anticipated matchup between teams that believe they can make deep runs in the postseason.

Here are the players to keep an eye on, keys to the game and other notes to know ahead of kickoff:

Players To Watch

Christian Segar

Daphne | Quarterback | Senior

Notable Stats: 64% completion, 1,632 passing yards, 75 rushing yards, 18 total touchdowns, 3 interceptions

For the Trojans, everything starts and stops offensively with Christian Segar.

Committed to play at nearby South Alabama beginning next fall, Daphne’s veteran quarterback is hoping to finish his productive high school career with a deep postseason run, and he’s doing everything he can to get his team there.

At 6-foot-3, Segar can make any throw on the field and looks incredibly poised while managing Kenny King’s offense, and he’s even showcased some of his dual-threat abilities in recent weeks.

Will Carr

Daphne | LB/S | Senior

A Daphne defense that gives up just under 15 points per game is led by plenty of stars, but Will Carr provides a true spark from the middle of the unit.

An instinctive tackler who has been productive for the Trojans throughout this season, Carr will be counted upon to help slow down Fairhope’s physical rushing attack.

Nic Ronsisvalle

Fairhope | Running Back | Senior

Notable Stats: 133+ carries, 730+ rushing yards, 14+ touchdowns, 72 receiving yards

And that ground game is spearheaded by the efforts of bruising runner Nic Ronsisvalle.

The senior tailback has defined what it means to be a “bellcow” this season, as he’s frequently ran the ball 20-plus times in a game and seemingly gets stronger as each contest wears on.

The battles between Ronsisville, the Fairhope offensive line and the Daphne front seven will be must-watch Friday night, as it may just turn into a war of attrition in the trenches.

Gus Faulkner

Fairhope | LB/S | Senior

Notable Stats: 84 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 4 pass breakups, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 1 blocked punt

Similar to the Trojans, the Pirates have plenty of standouts on the defensive side, but they’re led by one athlete in particular.

Currently committed to Tulane, Gus Faulkner flies from sideline-to-sideline and has made a habit out of producing impactful plays throughout his high school career.

Heck, he’s even a force to be reckoned with on special teams, as evidenced by his blocked punt and plethora of tackles in coverage.

The X-Factors

The age-old cliche: Who wins the battle in the trenches?

It’s a tale as old as time in the game of football: whoever wins the battle up front, generally comes out on top when the final horn sounds.

And while it may seem like low-hanging fruit to label that as a key for this contest, there’s plenty of reason to believe that the war in the trenches will directly determine who emerges victorious.

After all, Fairhope has made a living off being a physically imposing, run-first team this season, while Daphne’s defense has frequently bowed up and shut down opposing offensive attacks. Thus, an unstoppable force will meet an immovable object when these sides clash Friday night.

Additionally, the ability of Fairhope’s front seven to heat up Segar and make the normally in-command quarterback uncomfortable will be another key.

Which offense can produce some explosive plays?

While both of these offenses have enjoyed moderate success this season, neither necessarily specializes in producing chunk gains.

Both Daphne and Fairhope have largely employed methodical approaches to their respective offensive attacks, but when the margin of error shrinks in this evenly matched contest, the ability of either side to break off some explosive plays will be crucial.

From Ronsisvalle, to Segar, to Fairhope quarterback Trey Garner and Daphne running back Tay Young, there’s plenty of candidates to make big plays happen. The question becomes, who will step up to the plate?

Can either the Trojans or Pirates put together a full four quarters?

If there has been any form of complaint from these coaching staffs this season, it has been their team’s inability to play quality football for four full quarters.

For example, Fairhope had to rally to take down Baldwin County earlier in the season and suffered a disappointing home defeat at the hands of Baker just two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Daphne fell last week because it had to rally late, and the Trojans also had to overcome deficits against Baker and Foley.

A slow start or sluggish finish could doom either team’s chances, making it imperative that each side is locked in for the full 48 minutes.

Notes To Know

  • The all-time record between the schools currently stands at 26-11 in favor of Daphne. The Pirates did come out on top in 2025 by a score of 38-21, although the Trojans had won the previous two matchups.
  • Daphne has yet to allow a team to score more than 21 points. Meanwhile, Fairhope has only given up 30-plus on two occasions. As a result, points will likely come at a premium at Jubilee Stadium, making field position, turnovers and explosive plays all the more impactful.

Parker’s Perspective

With the weather cooling down and a pivotal rivalry game on the docket, this Friday’s matchup between Fairhope and Daphne figures to encapsulate everything that makes high school football so special.

The crowd at Jubilee Stadium will be more than energized for this regional clash, and that may create some added nerves on each sideline given the anticipation and stakes associated with this one.

But in the end, the game is won or lost between the white lines, and whichever squad can block out the outside noise and remain true to its identity when the lights are brightest will have a leg-up.

As I mentioned within my keys to the game, whether or not Ronsisvalle and the Pirate rushing attack can find a rhythm will be the first trend to note. Garner would love to see the Trojan defense cheat down to the box as it hopes to slow down his star tailback, because that would open things up downfield.

But if the Daphne defense can hold its own and keep Ronsisvalle to 2-3 yards per pop, then the unit can pin its ears back when going after Garner in the backfield.

And on the flip side, Fairhope has struggled to contain some of the area’s more dynamic athletes at times, meaning that the Trojans’ stable of running backs and receivers will be counted upon to produce some highlights. But the Pirates can even things out if they are able to consistently pressure Segar in the pocket, throwing him off his game.

In the end, I have to give a slight edge to the home side. I believe that the Trojans’ defensive front seven will become the story of the night, largely bottling up the Fairhope rushing attack and allowing its offense to dominate time of possession.

Still, this one will almost certainly come down to the final quarter, and if that’s the case, the victor will likely be whoever is fresher at this latter stage of the season.

The Pirates (6-2, 5-1) and Trojans (6-2, 5-1) will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday.
