Orange Beach provides update on weekend's LSU-FSU softball matchup at Sportsplex

During a summer retreat to the beach, LSU softball coaches decided the trip should include a look at where the Orange Beach Lady Makos trained to win a record six straight state championships.

Orange Beach Athletic Director and softball coach Shane Alexander said they liked what they saw.

“They swung by and looked at the facilities and asked if we'd be interested in hosting a fall game,” Alexander said. “I was like, absolutely.”

Alexander was on the softball field Tuesday getting it ready for a weekend series between LSU and Florida State, with games at 4 p.m. on Saturday and noon Sunday. Admission will be $10 cash.

Since the games will be at a city facility, money collected will go to the city and a city council that's always willing to help with academics and athletics at Orange Beach schools.

“We're just going to be generous hosts,” Alexander said. “They do so much for us.”

Alexander said the weekend games aren’t about recruiting since most of his girls are playing travel ball this fall. But he’s expecting a big crowd and admits he’s a bit anxious about everything being ready for the influx of two major-college programs and local avid softball fans.

“We're kind of nervous about where we're going to put everybody,” Alexander said. “We’ve got beautiful weather and we're just excited for them to come and play softball here.”

If all goes to plan, Alexander said he’d like to take a look at doing it again next year when college teams play a limited fall schedule.

“We'd love to make this an annual thing,” Alexander said. “Some of the in-state schools could come down for a weekend.”
