GULF SHORES – Dominic Maldet said he fell in love with the Montevallo campus when he went on a visit and decided that was where he wanted to continue his academic and baseball careers after his time at Gulf Shores High School.

“The culture is really good, it's like a family; they're really close and that's what I wanted was a family-type atmosphere,” Maldet said after he signed Wednesday at the high school. “There were some other junior colleges that were talking to me but I didn't I didn't fall in love like I did at Montevallo so I just felt like it was my home.”

Wednesday morning in the gymnasium, Maldet to pen to paper to cement his commitment to the Falcons with family, friends, coaches, teammates and classmates in attendance.

“It was awesome to have all these people here today, they've been there through everything,” Maldet said. “They're always there, they're a great support system and the school does a great job.”

The Dolphins catcher has found himself a home behind the plate in Gulf Shores where he’s already caught 459 innings in 71 games played in two varsity seasons. After he threw out 16% of runners attempting to steal bases as a sophomore, he collected outs on 38% of runners that attempted to steal a base as a junior.

He’s been no slouch in the batter’s box either, where he’s collected a .345 batting average with 38 hits including 11 doubles and a three-run home run that helped the Dolphins down Spanish Fort.

Gulf Shores has claimed the Class 6A Area 2 title each of the last two years and now Maldet serves as the sixth contributing member from those teams to sign with college teams. Since head coach Chris Jacks took over seven years ago, Maldet is the eighth baseball signee.

Maldet said the team would be younger this season but their goal is still on a third straight area title.

“We're going to be young and a little inexperienced but I feel like we'll have a strong season, it will be interesting,” Maldet said.

Either way, he’ll be able to play free and loose after he solidified his college decision.

“It feels great, just like something big off my back and I'm ready to compete this season and have fun so I'm looking forward to it,” he said.

His personal goal before leaving high school, however, is aimed at the top.

“I want to win the Blue Map,” he said of the state championship trophy. “We haven't gotten out of the second round of playoffs recently, been stuck there a few times.”
