Trade Thanksgiving leftovers for miles at the Coastal Half Marathon

Posted

Runners and families can trade Thanksgiving leftovers for a day on the trails when the 19th annual Coastal Half Marathon, 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run returns to Orange Beach on Nov. 28.

According to a news release about the event, registration is open for the event, which will begin and end at the Orange Beach Sportsplex and offer three race distances for participants of varying ages and abilities. Runners can compete in the half marathon, take on the 5K or join family and friends for the 1-mile fun run.

The post-Thanksgiving tradition offers visitors and residents an opportunity to enjoy Alabama’s Beaches beyond the shoreline while supporting the area’s tourism economy during the shoulder season.

“We look forward to this race every year because it gives families another way to experience Alabama’s Beaches together,” Michelle Russ, vice president of sales for Alabama's Beaches Sports & Events, said in the event. “It is a fun way to spend Thanksgiving weekend, get outside and experience our destination beyond the beach. It also brings visitors to our area during the shoulder season, helping support local businesses and contribute to the economic impact of sports tourism in our coastal communities.”

The courses are flat and accessible, taking participants along the scenic, paved Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail in Gulf State Park. The routes showcase the area's diverse natural landscape, with the half marathon also traveling along the beach road before returning through the park.

The event will offer activities and refreshments for participants and spectators after the races. The Columbia Southern University Family Fun Zone will feature inflatables and face painting, giving families additional ways to enjoy the day.

Runners can refuel with post-race food sponsored by Alabama Coastal Catering and drinks provided by Coca-Cola. The post-race festivities also will include live music and an awards ceremony.

Registration and packet pickup are scheduled for 3-5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at the Orange Beach Sportsplex. Race-day registration will be available from 6:30-7:45 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28.

The half marathon will start at 8 a.m., followed by the 5K at 8:10 a.m. and the 1-mile fun run at 8:20 a.m.
