Gulf Shores reschedules walking tour, plans tailgating event to gather public input

Posted

Gulf Shores residents will have another opportunity to help shape the city’s future during a rescheduled public walking tour for the Gulf Shores Plan, a comprehensive planning effort designed to guide growth and investment through 2045.

The guided walking tour, previously canceled because of Hurricane Isaias, is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at Canal Park, 101 W. Canal Drive.

The event will give residents an opportunity to speak directly with the planning team, share what makes Gulf Shores special and identify areas where improvements could be made. Community feedback will help planners understand residents’ priorities as they develop a long-term vision for the city.

An open house tailgating event is also planned before the football game Friday, Oct. 30, offering another opportunity for residents to participate in the planning process and share their ideas.

The Gulf Shores Plan is being developed in partnership with urban development planning firm Interboro LLC. The initiative builds on the city’s Vision 2035 Plan and aims to establish a shared vision and actionable strategies for the community’s future.

The planning effort comes as Gulf Shores continues to attract residents, businesses and investment. According to the project website, the plan is intended to help the city anticipate and manage growth rather than simply respond to changes as they occur.

The comprehensive plan will address land use, housing, transportation, economic development, parks and open space, environmental resilience, infrastructure and public services. It will help establish community priorities, align public investments and guide future policies and development decisions.

Unlike a regulatory document, the comprehensive plan will not directly regulate development. Instead, it will provide a long-term framework to guide decisions by elected officials and city staff while helping residents, property owners, businesses and community partners work toward shared goals.

Community engagement will be central to the planning process. In addition to walking tours, the website said opportunities to participate are expected to include public workshops, office hours, surveys and pop-up events. Residents, business owners, community organizations and other stakeholders will be able to share ideas, review concepts and respond to draft recommendations as the plan progresses.

Residents can follow the initiative through the city’s website at www.gulfshoresAL.gov and find additional information about the plan, its development and opportunities to participate at www.thegulfshoresplan.com.
