St. Paul’s Episcopal senior Janie Ford started her final AHSAA outdoor track and field season with a strong performance at the 65th Southeastern Relays in Saraland on Feb. 22. Ford’s performance included wins in three events where she set a state-best mark in all three to capture the first AHSAA outdoor track spotlight of the season.
The 100-meter hurdles were finished in 14.75, the 300-meter hurdles were finished in 44.22 and the long jump was won with a mark of 19 feet, 7.25 inches. The 300-meter time and long jump distance both checked into the top 15 of MileSplit’s national rankings.
As a junior, Ford won state titles in the 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles, triple jump and long jump. She also won the state heptathlon title for the second-straight season.
Across the Bay, Bayside Academy junior Shelby Fargason made the AHSAA spotlight with a victory in the 3200-meter run at the Battle of the Bay on Feb. 27. Fresh off a bronze medal from the indoor state championships, Fargason logged a time of 11:33.72 to start her outdoor season in first place.
Also from the Battle of the Bay, Bayshore Christian senior Caden Phillippi won the 3200-meter run with a time of 9:48.68. The Troy signee swept the distance races (800, 1600, 3200) at last year’s outdoor state championships and most recently repeated as an individual state champion on the cross country course.
