The National Wrestling Coaches Association recognized the Daphne Trojans as the Assistant Staff of the Year following a third state title in four seasons. Daphne wrestlers took home three individual state championships and added two state runners-up as part of nine athletes in the top nine of their weight class. Joe Smith, Matt Gilson, Mathew Wells and Jason Reid made up the girls’ Assistant Staff of the Year.

MaxPreps’ new top-ranked team from May 28’s national poll was none other than the four-time state champion Orange Beach Makos. With a 46-1 record in 2024, Orange Beach improved to 159-29-1 overall in its first four varsity seasons. At right, sophomore Ava Hodo is pictured squaring up a hit during the Makos’ host tournament against the Ocean Springs Greyhounds from Mississippi on March 23. Hodo led the team in four offensive categories, including 63 RBIs which ranked No. 15 in the state and No. 52 in the country.

Baldwin County girls’ soccer coaches selected Spanish Fort junior Basia Czarkowska (Large School) and St. Michael junior Francheska Arellano (Small School) as Coastal Alabama Female Players of the Year following another banner year for their teams. Czarkowska and the Toros won a third straight Class 6A Area 2 title and made the state quarterfinals. Arellano and the Cardinals won their first Class 4A Area 1 title since 2022 then made a repeat trip to the state championship match. The pair will also represent their schools at the AHSAA North-South All-Star contest this summer.

Orange Beach native and Gulf Shores alum Olivia Coaker was one of three Louisiana Christian Wildcats recognized with All-Region honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association following the 2024 season. The senior second baseman led the team in slugging percentage and also garnered first-team all-conference honors as well as a spot on the postseason All-Tournament team.

Gulf Shores senior Talan Galvan and Daphne sophomore Lacey Daffin represented their squads on the AHSAA Super All-State teams regardless of classification. Spanish Fort alumni Kris Abrams-Draine and DJ James recently put pen to paper on four-year NFL contracts with their respective teams following the 2024 Draft. Abrams-Draine signed with the Denver Broncos on May 10 and James inked his deal with the Seattle Seahawks on May 13.
