As the fall semester hits its back half, Gulf Coast Media’s next Athlete of the Week poll is currently live on our website.
Four athletes from Baldwin County will be included in the voting each week, which will open at noon on Mondays and close at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays.
Individuals can only vote for their chosen athlete once, with the winner being announced on GCM’s website and social media pages soon after polling concludes.
This week, we have a phenom in the pool and a trio of football standouts making up the list of candidates.
To start, Gulf Shores’ dynamic receiver Carter Davis has been a star for the Dolphins throughout this season, and he showed out when the lights were brightest Friday night. Battling Spanish Fort on The Hill, the West Virginia commit racked up over 150 yards of total offense and two touchdowns to help propel his team to a 36-0 victory.
Meanwhile, Baldwin County’s Ray Johnson stuffed the stat sheet behind center Friday night, as he threw for 300 yards and a quartet of touchdowns while also carrying the ball five times for 40 yards. His efforts helped the Tigers secure their second win of the season with a 26-0 result against Elberta on the road.
Elsewhere, Foley has a freshman phenom in the pool, because Kinsey Carden is enjoying a stellar campaign for the Lions. A third-year captain for the school’s swim team, Carden has already racked up three event wins, five Top 5 finishes and even recorded a pair of qualifying times (100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle) for the Alabama State Championship Meet in Huntsville.
And lastly, Bayside Academy received a handful of clutch efforts from its players to outlast Mobile Christian for a district title Friday, and veteran receiver Mason Edwards was one of such individuals. The senior hauled in five catches on six targets for 109 receiving yards, and his lone touchdown on a 50/50 ball pushed the Admirals ahead 27-20 in the closing moments of the game.
