DAPHNE — Down 14 points entering the fourth quarter, Bayside Academy watched its region championship hopes slip further away with every passing minute.

But the Admirals weren’t finished fighting.

Powered by a determined defensive effort, two blocked punts and a fourth-quarter offensive surge, Bayside scored 21 unanswered points to defeat Mobile Christian 27-20 on Friday night, claiming the Region 1 championship in dramatic fashion on its home field.

Quarterback Davis Barnett threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes, including the winner to Mason Edwards with just 33.7 seconds remaining, completing a comeback that required contributions from all three phases of the Admirals’ game.

For Bayside head coach Barrett Trotter, the victory reflected his team’s confidence even when the scoreboard suggested otherwise.

“I think it starts with believing in yourself, and these guys believe in what they do. They believe in their coaches,” Trotter said.

A defensive battle turns into a deficit

The opening quarter was a physical defensive struggle, with Mobile Christian applying consistent pressure and preventing Bayside from establishing an offensive rhythm.

The Leopards’ Tyrone Floyd and Rico Prince recorded sacks on Bayside’s first two possessions, while a blocked field-goal attempt and a turnover on downs kept the Admirals off the scoreboard.

Bayside finally broke through with 2:42 remaining in the second quarter when senior Sam Cunningham scored on a rushing touchdown. The missed extra point left the Admirals ahead 6-0.

Mobile Christian answered with a methodical 10-play possession. Quarterback Israel Benard connected with Damarien Gatson for a touchdown with 17 seconds remaining, giving the Leopards a 7-6 halftime advantage following the successful extra point.

The third quarter brought additional trouble for Bayside.

After the Admirals turned the ball over on downs, Benard connected with Ladouglas Jones Jr. for another touchdown, extending Mobile Christian’s lead to 14-6.

The Leopards’ defense continued creating opportunities, with Durrell Robinson intercepting Barnett on Bayside’s following possession.

Benard capitalized again, finding Hakeem Winston for an 80-yard touchdown pass with 2:02 remaining in the period. The unsuccessful extra-point attempt left Mobile Christian ahead 20-6.

Bayside entered the final quarter needing two touchdowns just to pull even.

Special teams ignite the comeback

The momentum shifted when Bayside’s Caid Lyons blocked a Mobile Christian punt during the fourth quarter.

The Leopards' Xavier Harris recovered the football and attempted to advance it, but the Admirals ultimately gained possession.

Barnett capitalized, finding Walker Collins for a touchdown with 6:36 remaining. Carson Kohn’s extra point narrowed the Leopards’ advantage to 20-13. Collins established himself as a valuable receiving target throughout the contest, challenging Mobile Christian’s coverage and helping sustain Bayside’s passing attack.

The Admirals’ special teams struck again on Mobile Christian’s next possession.

Riggins Hammock blocked another punt, with Grant Yaeger recovering the football for Bayside this time around.

Two plays later, Cunningham delivered his second rushing touchdown of the night. Kohn converted the extra point, tying the contest at 20 with 3:56 remaining.

In less than three minutes of game time, Bayside had erased a 14-point deficit.

Barnett commands the final drive

With the game tied and a championship hanging in the balance, Bayside’s defense delivered another stop.

Yaeger recorded a pivotal sack during Mobile Christian’s ensuing possession, contributing to a defensive stand that forced the Leopards to punt with 1:34 remaining.

Barnett took the field with one final opportunity to complete the comeback.

Five plays later, he connected with Edwards for the go-ahead touchdown with 33.7 seconds left, giving Bayside its first lead since the second quarter.

Kohn’s third successful extra point extended the advantage to 27-20.

Despite orchestrating the decisive possession, Barnett credited his defense for keeping the Admirals within reach.

“I didn’t play my best game tonight, but my defense had my back,” Barnett said.

Bayside’s Warren Johnson provided the final defensive answer, intercepting Mobile Christian’s last offensive pass to seal the championship.

Defensive resilience and accountability

The Admirals’ defensive front, featuring Yaeger, George Kaiser, Ladd Powers and River Hannaman, contributed to a second-half response that helped slow Mobile Christian’s offensive production.

Bayside defensive coordinator Coach Pratt credited the players’ confidence in the defensive system and their willingness to continue competing through adversity.

“These Bayside kids are different. They’re not going to give up. They’re going to fight you,” Pratt said.

On the opposing sideline, Mobile Christian head coach Charles Lawson acknowledged that mistakes had accumulated throughout the contest.

“Special teams is one thing that we gotta work on,” Lawson said.

Beyond the two blocked punts, Lawson identified missed tackles, defensive misalignments and offensive blocking errors as areas requiring correction.

Despite the defeat, Lawson emphasized his team’s ability to address those mistakes as the Leopards prepare for their final regular-season matchup and the postseason.

Defining Moments

Early resistance sets the tone

Mobile Christian’s defensive front challenged Bayside from the opening possession. Sacks by Tyrone Floyd and Rico Prince, a blocked field-goal attempt and a turnover on downs prevented the Admirals from establishing an early advantage despite moving the football.

The defensive stand that opened the door

With the score tied at 20, Bayside’s defense prevented Mobile Christian from reclaiming momentum. The Admirals’ late pressure forced another punt, providing Barnett with 1:34 to orchestrate the championship-winning possession.

Obscure Observations

A technical adjustment changes the matchup

Bayside defensive coordinator Coach Pratt explained that Mobile Christian quarterback Israel Benard initially exploited escape lanes outside the pocket, forcing defensive backs to maintain coverage longer.

Adjustments to the five-technique defensive ends improved containment and allowed the Admirals to challenge the passing attack more effectively.

Collins delivers beyond the end zone

Walker Collins’ fourth-quarter touchdown was only part of his receiving contribution.

Earlier in the contest, he secured a contested reception near the goal line for a first down, demonstrating his ability to provide Barnett with a reliable target against tight coverage.

Looking Ahead

With the Region 1 championship secured, Bayside Academy (7-1) returns to its home field Thursday to face Snook Christian before traveling to Gulf Shores on Friday, Oct. 30, for its regular-season finale.

The Admirals will look to build on their fourth-quarter comeback, improve offensive efficiency and continue refining the defensive adjustments that helped secure the championship. Head coach Barrett Trotter said Monday’s film session will be an opportunity to correct mistakes as Bayside prepares for the postseason.

Mobile Christian (7-2), meanwhile, will travel to Fairhope to face Bayshore Christian on Friday for its regular-season finale. After surrendering a 14-point fourth-quarter lead, the Leopards will seek to correct special-teams protection breakdowns, missed tackles and blocking assignments before postseason play.

Both programs are preparing for the Private School Class A playoffs, scheduled to begin Friday, Nov. 6.

Bayside enters as Region 1 champion, while Mobile Christian looks to turn the lessons from Friday’s defeat into improved execution heading into the postseason.
