Historic Blakeley State Park will showcase its reputation as one of the Gulf Coast's most vibrant educational and recreational destinations with two special events Friday, May 9.
In the afternoon, the park will host one-hour cruises to the SS United States, the legendary 1950s ocean liner currently docked in Mobile harbor. The vessel, once the fastest liner to cross the Atlantic and the largest passenger ship built entirely in the United States, is being prepared to serve as a man-made reef off the Florida coast.
Guests will board at the Mobile Convention Center dock for three separate excursions guided by renowned historian John Sledge, offered in partnership with the National Maritime Museum. Sledge will highlight the ship's history, including its celebrated designers, builders and passengers, and share the stories of those who have worked to preserve this icon of American maritime heritage. The cruise also promises a rare waterside view of the famed vessel.
Later that evening, the park's popular "Music in the Park" series continues with a live performance from High Cotton, a favorite local cover band known for blending classic hits with modern favorites. The free concert begins at 6:30 p.m. at the park's outdoor venue. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and enjoy the night under the stars. Pat Sledge Catering will offer a variety of sandwiches and wraps for purchase.
