The Eastern Shore dominated Baldwin County’s selections to the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s North-South All-Star rosters for golf and tennis that were released Tuesday.
Nine athletes were recognized between five girls’ golfers, two boys’ golfers and two boys’ tennis players where Fairhope led the way with five representatives. Both tennis players came from Spanish Fort and Daphne and Bayside Academy earned one spot each on the girls’ golf roster.
Hitting the links on the girls’ circuit July 17 at Arrowhead Country Club will be Addison Spears, Callie Henderson and Teal Gardner from Fairhope, Samiya Bodalia from Daphne and Causey Thompson from Bayside Academy.
In the boys’ golf competition will be two more Fairhope Pirates in Trip Duke and Miles Miller. On the tennis courts, Jacob Thom and Jake Miller from Spanish Fort will be competing in the boys’ tennis match.
State-qualifying golfers turned all-stars
Both Spears and Duke finished their postseasons recently at the ASHAA state golf tournament. Spears was Baldwin County’s lowest female scorer and finished seventh where Duke registered a tie for fourth with the second-best score among local male golfers.
The Fairhope pair is among 17 total all-stars who played at the state golf championships last week in Opelika.
Although this will only be the fourth annual all-star golf match, the North squad holds leads in both competitions after sweeping last year’s events. The girls’ series sits 2-1 in favor of the North and the boys’ ledger reads 3-0 in favor of the North All-Stars.
Toro tennis players set to return to court
Similarly, Thom and Miller earned all-star recognition after a deep postseason run where they helped the Spanish Fort boys’ tennis squad take fourth place in the team competition at the AHSAA state tournament in Mobile at the end of April.
The No. 6 singles and No. 2 doubles brackets’ championship match featured Thom and Miller, respectively, where each recorded a runner-up finish. In 2022, Miller claimed an individual state title in straight sets in the No. 4 singles bracket.
The pair of Toros will be joined on the South All-Star roster by LAMP’s Ian Shin and Ian Kim who also played in championship matches and collected singles titles on the Class 5A circuit.
The North All-Stars also hold leads on the tennis courts entering the fourth annual competition Monday, July 17. The girls’ advantage sits at 3-0 after a 6-3 win last year and the boys’ lead moved to 2-1 after the South All-Stars’ 6-3 win last year.
More on AHSAA All-Star Week
The four 10-member teams comprised of 2024 rising seniors were announced by Brandon Dean, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA).
The AHSADCA, which operates under the auspices of the AHSAA will also host all-star games in basketball, softball, baseball, volleyball, cross country and soccer during the All-Star Week, July 17-21. All-Star rosters for basketball, volleyball, cross country, baseball and softball and soccer have already been announced.
