Spanish Fort’s Boykin named AHSAA All-Star coach, four Baldwin County players named to volleyball squad

Tuesday, Spanish Fort head volleyball coach Gretchen Boykin was named head coach of the South All-Stars for the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s North-South All-Star Week this summer after the Toros’ trip to the state championship.

Boykin will have one of her players, Reece Varden, as well as three others from Baldwin County on the team including Orange Beach’s Amelia Edgeworth and Bayside Academy’s Blakeley Robbins and Maysie Douglas.

The two 15-member teams comprised of 2024 rising seniors were announced by Brandon Dean, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA) which operates under the auspices of the AHSAA. Other all-star games including baseball, softball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ basketball, cross country, tennis and golf will be held during All-Star Week, July 17-22.

Varden played a role in Spanish Fort’s (46-17) first state title match since 2019 after the Toros won the Class 6A Area 2 tournament and South Super Regional over Bayside Academy. Varden was named to the all-state tournament team alongside teammates Alexis Belarmino and Bailey Hope.

Edgeworth helped the Makos register the program’s first win over Gulf Shores before claiming the Class 4A Area 1 title. In the playoffs, Orange Beach (33-11) secured third place from the South Super Regional and eventually fell in the state semifinals after jumping two classifications from the previous season.

Robbins was named the state tournament MVP after she and Douglas captured the Admirals’ national record 21st consecutive state championship and 31st overall. Bayside Academy (53-24) remains the only AHSAA program to win a state title in six classifications (Class 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A).

The South All-Stars will be matched up against a North squad that will feature three athletes that competed in state championships, including Addison’s Dacey Baker, Donoho’s Estella Connell and Bob Jones’ Megan Jarrett.

In last year’s meeting, the North All-Stars recorded a 3-2 victory to improve to 15-9 in the all-time series which started playing in 1997.
