Holley returns to Spanish Fort with No. 1 singles title from Class 6A tennis state championships

Despite a two-day gap between the semifinals and finals, Spanish Fort senior Goodwin Holley secured the No. 1 singles state championship for the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Class 6A Friday, April 28, in Montgomery.

After competition concluded Tuesday in Mobile, the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches still had to be played due to match limitations.

Holley, who signed with the University of Mobile in the interim, took care of business over Luke Schwefler from Mountain Brook 6-1, 6-1 to claim the individual title and help the Toros register fourth place in the team competition.

He was joined by Jacob Thom (No. 6 singles) and the Maysun Marino/Jake Miller pairing (No. 2 doubles) in representing Spanish Fort in the championship matches of their respective brackets although they both earned runner-up finishes. The Toros finished with 44 points in the team competition.

Baldwin County was also represented at the state tennis tournament by Bayshore Christian (1A-3A), Bayside Academy (4A-5A), St. Michael Catholic (4A-5A), Gulf Shores (4A-5A), Fairhope (7A) and Daphne (7A).

In the Class 4A-5A girls’ bracket, Bayside Academy’s Claire Prickett recorded two wins in the No. 1 singles slot as well as the No. 1 doubles competition with Lillie McInnis. Prickett’s first win came in the second round over Gulf Shores eighth grader Tereza Mojs, who beat LAMP’s Hannah Baik in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.

In the boys’ bracket, St. Michael Catholic’s Jeb Bathric earned a first-round win to contribute two points to the team score.

Also in action earlier this week on the Class 1A-3A circuit were the Bayshore Christian Eagles who had both boys’ and girls’ team qualify. Anna Elise Sherrod (No. 1 singles) and Emily Adamson (No. 4 singles) both registered first-round wins to contribute four points to their team score.

On the Class 7A stage later in the week, the Fairhope Pirates had three representatives earn first-round victories including Mary Mac Rux (No. 6 singles), Claudia Catar/Paige Evans (No. 1 doubles) and Anna Calzetta/Skylar Spinks (No. 2 doubles).
