Although Mountain Brook was crowned the team champions of the Class 6A tennis state championship, one more boys’ singles match was still to be determined where Spanish Fort’s Goodwin Holley was set to compete for an individual state title Friday afternoon in Montgomery.

He was joined by Jacob Thom (No. 6 singles) and the Maysun Marino/Jake Miller pairing (No. 2 doubles) in representing the Toros in the championship matches of their respective brackets although they both earned runner-up finishes. Spanish Fort entered the final match with 42 points in the team competition which was good for fourth place.

Also in action earlier this week on the Class 1A-3A circuit were the Bayshore Christian Eagles who had both boys’ and girls’ team qualify. Anna Elise Sherrod (No. 1 singles) and Emily Adamson (No. 4 singles) both registered first-round wins to contribute four points to their team score.

After rain delayed the start of play Thursday in Mobile, the Class 4A-5A and 7A brackets opened in the afternoon.

The St. Michael Catholic boys’ team and Bayside Academy girls’ team sent the full allotment of six singles players and three doubles pairings to the 4A-5A tournament, as did both boys’ and girls’ teams from Fairhope and Daphne to the 7A tournament. Tereza Mojs, an eighth grader from Gulf Shores, also qualified individually for the 4A-5A state championship in the No. 1 singles slot.
