The Alabama Department of Public Health has closed shellfish growing waters in Baldwin and Mobile counties following rainfall associated with Hurricane Isaias that could have caused bacteriological contamination of oyster beds.
The closure took effect at 10 a.m. Oct. 8 under an order issued by State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris. Areas I, II, III, IV, V and VI are closed to shellfish harvesting.
The affected areas include Cedar Point, Portersville Bay, Heron Bay, Navy Cove, Dauphin Island Bay and Grand Bay.
ADPH said the closure was prompted by possible bacteriological contamination of the oyster beds resulting from rainfall associated with Hurricane Isaias.
The department will continue to monitor bay waters and shellfish in the affected areas. Harvesting can resume as soon as the areas meet acceptable bacteriological criteria.
