Shady Field weed problem addressed

SUMMERDALE, Ala. — After a little intervention from the town of Summerdale, Shady Field subdivision is getting spruced up.

During Monday’s Council meeting, Mayor David Wilson announced that Creola Holdings, the new owners of the subdivision that sits on County Road 32 East started mowing the grass that morning.

“They have pledged a rigorous mowing and maintenance schedule,” he told the subdivision residents at Monday’s council meeting.

That pledge came after residents complained that the grass in the right of ways, retention poind and vacant lots had overgrown and the street lights had been out for about a year.

Town Clerk Tiffany Jackson explained that the 56-lot Shady Field subdivision was built around 2004. Since then, a dozen families moved in and the subdivision has changed hands several times, with Creola Holdings being the latest.

“They’re in the middle of closing right now,” Wilson said, adding that the company’s property representative, Tom Poulas, has pledged to keep its portion of the property maintained.

Several residents had expressed frustration over the overgrown grass and lights. Wilson publicized the problem by bringing Channel 5 to the subdivision recently and a story was aired on its newscast. Subsequently, the complaints were addressed.

Further discussion led the council to explain that the only way the town could take over management of the subdivision would be if the owner approached them with a request to do so. However, the council did pass a resolution updating its grass and weed ordinance.
