Resolution for a five-year strategic plan adopted;management agreement on new skate park approved

The Gulf Shores City Council unanimously adopted a resolution for a five-year strategic plan, and expressed appreciation for those who participated in the development of it, during its regular meeting on Monday night.

Recently selected as an Alabama City of Excellence, the city’s strategic plan is designed to allow it to continue at this level of performance.

The council also approved a resolution authorizing a management agreement with Blonde John’s Surf and Skate Inc. to oversee the new Skate Park at Meyer Park.

Making strides to have an effective contingency plan in the event of a major storm or crisis, the council authorized a contract with GIS Disaster services that would essentially provide a “city hall on wheels,” using computer backups of critical data. According to discussion during the June 4 work session, the city will be charged for the service only if it’s used.

During the meeting, Mayor Billy Duke highlighted some of the performances headed to the Island as a part of the 2008 Entertainment Series. Topping the list, which he called “one of the best lineups the city has had in quite a while,” are musical artists Pam Tillis, Roger Williams and the Les Brown Band, whom oldtimers will remember as “Les Brown & His Band of Renown.”

While there hasn’t been any word on the county’s or state’s participation just yet, the council passed an ordinance allowing a city sales tax holiday during the first weekend of August on certain back-to-school related purchases. The city’s portion of the 9 percent sales tax is currently 3 percent.
