Nonprofit organizations benefit from retailer’s grand opening

DAPHNE — A number of nonprofit organizations received donations from Sam’s Club this past week as part of the grand opening ceremonies.

Recipients included the Daphne Police Department, the Daphne Fire Department and The Haven, a no-kill animal shelter in Fairhope.

The Daphne Police Department received a $5,000 grant.

There are “so many different aspects that you can use the money for,” police Chief David Carpenter said. “We will use it to purchase equipment that may not be budgeted.”

The money will go toward anything that can be used for crime prevention, like on-board cameras, Carpenter said.

The fire department also received a $5,000 grant.

The department has four staff fire trucks that will see an electronic upgrade, according to interim fire Chief Kenny Hanak.

“We have a database with the structural setup of all commercial buildings in Daphne,” Hanak said.

The department can look up a location through its physical address or the name of the business, according to Hanak. But with the growing number of businesses, it’s getting tougher to carry the hard copy around, he said.

The department will be “buying laptop computers for the trucks that are hard-wired in,” Hanak said.

This will make the database accessible while in the fire trucks on the way to a call, Hanak said.

The Haven, a nonprofit shelter for abused, homeless and neglected animals, received a grant of $2,000.

“One hundred percent will go to the animals,” Michael Graham, executive director of the Haven, said.

“The grant will help cover medical costs such as spaying and neutering animals, or like when an animal has been hit by a vehicle and is brought in,” Graham said.

The Haven also helps pet owners by informing them about available resources, according to Graham.

“Today we donated $27,500 to local organizations,” said Tom Snow, club manager of the Daphne Sam’s Club.

“These are organizations that were chosen by the associates,” Sarah Brock, business manager of the Daphne Sam’s Club, said.

Associates had listed nonprofit, area organizations that they wanted to see benefit from the grants, Brock said.

Each organization was then contacted and asked to make a presentation to show how the money could benefit their organization, he said.

The corporation allows a certain amount of donations each quarter, Brock said.
