Honoring fallen heroes

State Attorney General Troy King and Baldwin County Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack Jr. place a wreath in front of the memorial dedicated to Baldwin County’s fallen heroes during a ceremony held Monday in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Week throughout the state. The memorial, located at the Sheriff’s Department office in Robertsdale, was dedicated in 2001 to the memory of six officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, including Deputy Howard E. Dutton, Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, Oct. 1, 1987; Corp. Larry D. Cawyer, Alabama Highway Patrol, May 25, 1985; Corp. Riley D. Smith, AHP, Dec. 17, 1971; Lt. Coy Smith, Alabama Public Service Commission, June 28, 1994; Joseph F. Smith, town marshall, Aug. 18, 1910; and Patrolman Joe F. Partin, AHP, July 25, 1980. Police chiefs from throughout the county, along with several officers, were in attendance. King told those present that the ceremony honors not only those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, but all officers who put themselves on the line every day to protect others, and their family members, who support them.
