ROBERTSDALE, AL — It’s time once again to put on your cowboy boots and kick up a little sand when Bulls on the Beach returns to the Gulf Coast Sept. 13-14, this time at the iconic Flora-Bama.
Once again, Robertsdale native Cody Harris, along with bull-riding event producer and former rodeo clown Jerry Byrd and Robertsdale business owner Bill Patterson, are co-producing the event.
The event is sponsored by Jim Beam, Flora-Bama, Perdido Key Chamber & Visitors Center and Coast 360. The city of Orange Beach is also a main contributor, Harris said.
In an interview for the first Bulls on the Beach event in 2012, Harris said he got the idea for the series while he was filming Southern Nights in Savannah, Ga.
As soon as filming ended, he called Byrd, who has experience coordinating similar events. The two formed a partnership called Bulls on the Beach LLC, and a production company called Ranchey Productions and the event, “Bulls on the Beach” was born.
First staged at Live Bait and Live Bait Too in August of 2012, the event was also in Florida as part of the Bonfire Jam in December, then came back to Orange Beach for a three-week event at The Wharf in Orange Beach in March.
Harris said he hopes to make Bulls on the Beach an annual event every year on the weekend after Labor Day.
“I really think we’ve found a home with the Flora-Bama,” he said. “I love working with them, along with the city of Orange Beach and the mayor. They’ve really been supportive throughout this whole thing.”
Unlike with previous events, this time the event will be held right on the beach, setting up in Flora-Bama’s east parking lot on the Florida side in Perdido Key.
“You can’t get any closer to the beach than we are this year,” Harris said. “I think it’s going to be the event of the year.”
Once again, the show will feature stars from Country Music Television’s “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Southern Nights,” along with the new reality show “Dukes of Cattle,” which premiered last month featuring Harris, fellow “Sweet Home Alabama” alumnus Bubba Thompson and rancher Booger Brown.
“I’m really excited about it,” Harris said. “For as little as it was promoted, the network told us it was their best-rated show ever and we’re hoping to hear something really soon.”
Cameras will be rolling at the weekend event, capturing footage for possible future shows, along with other reality series.
Events are set to begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13 with a mechanical bull riding bikini contest and public mechanical bull riding. Tickets are $5 and you must sign a waiver to ride.
Several promotional events have been planned in the hours leading up to the main event, including Bull Poker and Money the Hard Way, in which money will be tied between a bull’s horns. The first person to retrieve the money walks away with the cash (that is providing they are able to walk afterward).
Saturday’s main event will be from 8-9:30 p.m. with tickets costing $25 for adults and $10 for ages 17 and under.
“The bull riding event will be family-friendly,” Harris said, “so we encourage everyone to come out for a good time.”
Seating for the event will be limited to about 2,000, Harris said, with plenty of standing room available.
Tickets for the show are available online at www.FloraBama.com or on the Ranchey Productions website, www.bullriding247.com. Condo packages are also available. Email rancheyproductions@gmail.com for information. You can also email that address to inquire about sponsorship information, Harris said.
Parking is limited, but free shuttles will be available to and from the event. Shuttle information will be provided with tickets, Harris said.
There will also be plenty of live music inside the Flora-Bama, featuring big name acts from the world of country and Southern rock.
“We’ll have three bands going at all times throughout the event,” he said. “I encourage everyone to get their tickets early, come early and bring your party shoes.”
Plenty of promotional items from Bulls on the Beach and all your favorite shows will also be available, Harris said.
“I want to also encourage everyone to support our sponsors,” Harris said. “Without them none of this would be possible.”
In addition to promoting Bulls on the Beach, Harris also helping to promote Platinum Productions, which is owned by his fiancée, Misty Woodcock, and her family, including parents Tim and Denise Woodcock, of Kiln, Miss.
“They produce some major, major barrel racing events throughout the country,” he said in an earlier interview, “and I am proud to be a part of it.”
The next Platinum Productions event will be Nov. 22-24 in Jackson, Miss., and will serve as a qualifier for RFD TV’s The American $2 million One-Day Rodeo on March 2 Arlington, Texas.
