Foley Farmers and Fishermen's Market seems to be on schedule

FOLEY, Ala. — It seems the Foley Farmers and Fishermen’s Market is on track to open on Oct. 5.

During Monday’s meeting of the Foley Public Facilities Cooperative District, City Economic Development Director Jeff Rouzie said earlier that day three cupulas had been placed on the roof’s frame. In addition, roofing and siding began Tuesday.

Tim Murrell of Construction Concepts in Robertsdale projected that the roofing should be completed next week.

While construction remains in progress, plans continue regarding the market's opening. For example, the Alabama Festival of Flavor’s Chicago Street Dinner will be held there on opening day. It’s a predecessor to the second annual festival on Oct. 19 in downtown Foley.

According to South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Donna Watts, the setting is the ideal location for the dinner because both ventures share the same goal.

“This one-of-a-kind, outdoor dining experience is sure to capture the essence of South Alabama and celebrate our local culinary traditions,” she said in a news release. “We hope to raise awareness of the fresh ingredients available to us in Alabama by showcasing them during this spectacular event and encourage people in our communities to support our farmers and fishermen.”

As work continues, Market Manager Heather Pritchard said she is working on the market website so consumers can know what would be available when they plan to visit.

“The variety of what I’ve got is exciting,” she said.

During the meeting, Foley City Councilman Rick Blackwell expressed that he has received a lot of encouraging feedback about the market.

“It’s creating a lot of interest,” he said.

As previously reported, the structure, situated next door to Wolf Bay Lodge on County Road 20, will house 30 vendor stalls. Upon its launch, the market will be open three days a week during its fall season, which runs through a portion of November.
