Dixon lands on second-team; Johnson, Sims, Robertson, Harris garner third-team honors from ASWA

Five basketball players from Baldwin County were recognized by the Alabama Sports Writers Association on all-state teams. One athlete each from Foley, Daphne, Fairhope, Orange Beach and Snook Christian Academy were all-state selections.

On the Class 7A stage, Foley senior Jestiny Dixon (G/F, 5' 8") was a second-team honoree and Daphne junior La'Merrica Johnson (F, 5' 11") earned a spot on the third-team all-state. On the boys' circuit, Fairhope junior Spence Sims (G, 6' 1') was also named to the third team.

Orange Beach senior Joey Robertson (F, 6' 6"), who became his school's first all-state selection last year, garnered a third-team spot after previously being an all-state honorable mention. From the Alabama Independent School Association, senior Kareem Harris (G, 6') represented Snook Christian Academy on the third-team all-state.

With instant-scorers Sims and Harris at the guard spots and an equally lethal duo of Dixon and Johnson at the forward positions, having Robertson at a center spot rounds out a starting lineup that would likely put pressure on a scoreboard operator to keep up with them if they were to actually take the floor together.

Below are the local representatives on the ASWA all-state basketball squads.

GIRLS

Class 7A

Second-team: Jestiny Dixon, Foley; senior G/F, 5’ 8”

The most valuable player of the Central Region Tournament, Dixon and the Foley Lions made history by qualifying for the program’s first state semifinals. She finished the regional tournament averaging 19 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.5 steals per game. Foley finished the season 23-6 overall and ranked No. 7 in the final ASWA state poll.

Third-team: La’Merrica Johnson, Daphne; junior F, 5’ 11”

Johnson was named to the all-regional tournament team after she recorded 19 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals in the region finals following a 30-point, 17-rebound double-double in the Trojans’ win over Auburn. Daphne finished the season 18-14 overall.

BOYS

Class 7A

Third-team: Spence Sims, Fairhope; junior G, 6’ 1”

Prep Hoops’ No. 2 point guard in the state and the sixth-ranked overall prospect in Alabama for his class, Sims was part of a history-making Pirate squad that also found the end of the road in the region championship game. Fairhope won its fourth straight area title and advanced to its second Elite Eight in the last three years and finished with a 27-3 overall record.

Class 4A

Third-team: Joey Robertson, Orange Beach; senior F, 6’ 6”

Another all-regional tournament team honoree, Robertson collected his 1,000th career point with a 24-point, 13-rebound double-double in the Makos’ non-area win over Elberta. Robertson also made program history after he became the first basketball player from Orange Beach to sign with a college team.

AISA Class A

Third-team: Kareem Harris, Snook Christian; senior G, 6’

Harris helped the Eagles collect the No. 1 seed heading into the postseason after a 13-game win streak in the regular season. During that stretch, he put up two games with 40-plus points separated by just 12 days with 44 points Jan. 17 and 43 points Jan. 5. Harris was also an all-state representative on the football field where Snook Christian got back to the playoffs for the first time since 2018.
