Harris scores 44 in Snook’s region win, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach girls each win by two points

The Tuesday night slate of basketball games around Baldwin County included some big non-area contests as well as some even bigger matchups with playoff implications on the line down the stretch of the regular season.

On the girls’ circuit, both Gulf Shores and Orange Beach won by two points in non-area games over Murphy and Baldwin County, respectively.

On the boys’ side, Spanish Fort earned a big non-area win over Bayside Academy and both Fairhope and Snook Christian recorded victories to remain unbeaten in area play over Daphne and Escambia Academy, respectively.

Below are scores and some highlights from Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Boys’ non-area

Baldwin County 79, Orange Beach 71

Tigers outlast Makos in back-and-forth game to improve to 6-11 overall with a home game against Spanish Fort in Class 6A Area 2 play set for Friday. Orange Beach falls to 7-15 overall with a trip to St. Michael Catholic on the Friday docket to resume play in Class 4A Area 1.

Murphy 48, Gulf Shores 38

Dolphins fall to 5-13 overall with a home game against B.C. Rain scheduled for Friday.

Spanish Fort 83, Bayside Academy 45

Toros improve to 16-7 overall with an away game against Baldwin County set for the end of the week.

Class 7A Area 2

Fairhope 60, Daphne 51

Pirates win the first round of area play at 2-0 ahead of Daphne (1-1) and Foley (0-2). Fairhope improves to 22-1 overall behind double-digit efforts from McRae Taul (18 points, 11 rebounds), Spence Sims (13 points, 7 rebounds) and Caden Creel (11 points, 4 assists). The Trojans fall to 13-11 overall with a non-area road trip to Robertsdale scheduled for Thursday.

Class 6A Area 2

McGill-Toolen 58, Robertsdale 53

Katton Hobbs led Golden Bear scorers with 15 points. Robertsdale moves to 16-7 overall and 1-2 in area play for third place entering Thursday’s non-area contest against Daphne.

Class 5A Area 1

B.C. Rain 63, Elberta 55

Warriors fall to 9-6 overall and 1-2 in area play through the first round. Round 2 is scheduled to start Friday on the road against Williamson.

AISA Class 1A Region 2

Snook Christian 79, Escambia Academy 74

Kareem Harris led Eagle scorers with 44 points in his second 40-point effort in 12 days after a 43-point night Jan. 5 over Central Christian. Jayson Kidwell poured in 18 points of his own and Robert Dunn nailed the go-ahead three-pointer in the final minute to help Snook Christian improve to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in region play. The Eagles’ next game is set for Friday against Aletheia Christian Academy in non-region action.

Girls’ non-area

Gulf Shores 40, Murphy 38

Dolphins improve to 11-9 overall with play set to resume within Class 5A Area 1 Friday at home against B.C. Rain.

Orange Beach 50, Baldwin County 48

Makos move to 12-11 on the season with another non-area game against Milton set for Wednesday before traveling to face St. Michael Catholic Friday. The Tigers fall to 2-11 with a home game against Spanish Fort set for Friday.

Class 7A Area 2

Daphne 62, Fairhope 34

Trojans improve to 13-9 on the season and 1-1 in area play through the first round. Daphne is off the rest of this week and will face Fairhope again next Tuesday, Jan. 24. The Pirates fall to 7-13 overall and 0-2 in the group with a home game against Foley set for Friday.

Class 6A Area 2

McGill-Toolen 63, Robertsdale 14

Golden Bears fall to 6-17 overall with their next game set for next Tuesday, Jan. 24, on the road against Spanish Fort.

Class 5A Area 1

B.C. Rain 41, Elberta 13

Warriors fall to 0-19 overall with an away game against Williamson scheduled for Friday evening.

AISA Class 1A Region 2

Snook Christian 56, Escambia Academy 37

Eagles improve to 3-5 overall with a Friday non-region game against Aletheia Christian Academy up next.
