SILVERHILL — The Silverhill Town Council took care of business during its regular meeting Monday night at the Silverhill Town Hall.
Following a public hearing the council voted unanimously to approve rezoning property on Ninth Street from B-2 to R-3.
The property was initially rezoned for the placement of a business, but after the business moved to Robertsdale, building and all, the property was left vacant.
Len Jones and partner C.D. McBride purchased the property and plan to build a duplex. Jones is currently building a pair of duplexes on property close by, he said.
The new duplexes would have a different appearance on the outside, he said, but the basic floor plan would be the same.
Jones said the duplexes would be single family dwellings and, because of the proximity to Silverhill School, would probably be purchased by a single parent or family with school-aged children.
In other business, the council voted to adopt Ordinance 371 to amend the town’s building permit inspection fees and valuation process.
When adopted, Ordinance No. 371 will amend Ordinance No. 363 originally adopted Aug. 5, 1996 and last amended June 20, 2005.
The new Ordinance includes several changes, including the increase of some fees, consolidating others, while creating and clarifying other portions of the Ordinance.
The council also voted Monday to adopt changes to the town’s personnel policy.
In other business Monday the council:
— Voted to purchase Christmas decorations for the town at a cost of $199 each.
— Tabled a measure to start a quarterly newsletter for the town in order to solicit the help of the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce to produce the newsletter.
— Tabled a measure to provide a flood water contract for the town.
— Agreed to get prices for cleaning of Town Hall and Little Hall to be presented at a future meeting.
— Heard from Max Ard with Baldwin County Express, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving historic documents and photographs. Ard urged the town to visit the organization’s website www.baldwinexpress.com. Ard said his organization is approaching all municipalities in Baldwin County about membership in the organization. The organization plans to have a display, which will be made to replicate the old Pine Knot Special steam locomotive, in time for the county’s Bicentennial Celebration in 2009.
— Voted to recondition cameras for the town’s three police cars at a cost of not less than $600 and no more than $1,600.
— Voted to change the town’s Library Board meeting from the second Tuesday of every month to the second Thursday of every month at 6 p.m.
— Voted to change the Utility Department hours to 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. effective June 21.
— Voted to contract with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department for transportation of prisoners. The town council voted to sign an agreement with the city of Fairhope at its June 4 meeting, pending agreement from the city of Fairhope. But the measure was tabled by Fairhope, leaving the town no place to transport prisoners if necessary. By also contracting with the county, it will give the town a backup when the agreement with Fairhope is approved, said Police Chief Alvin Coggins.
— Voted to authorize Coggins to purchase a fax machine for the police department.
— Voted to purchase a lap top computer for court records from Computer Doctor at a cost of $1,400.
— Met in executive session at Coggins’ request following regular business to discuss the good name and character of an individual.
