Bayside Academy finishes 16th in national race for state championships

In a nationwide competition based on the most amount of state championships won throughout the 2021-2022 seasons, the Bayside Academy Admirals finished 16th in the country in the MaxPreps Cup.

With a 20th consecutive fall state championship won in volleyball – Bayside’s 30th overall – boys’ and girls’ cross country added titles as well.

In the winter, both indoor track teams finished as state runners-up to earn a pair of Red Map trophies.

The Admirals finished things off with a bang as spring champions in boys’ golf, boys’ soccer, girls’ tennis and boys’ and girls’ outdoor track to register 1,642 points in the cup standings. Points are awarded for state championships, state runner-up finishes and national rankings.

Bayside Academy was the second Alabama school out of five recognized on the list. It was joined by Mountain Brook at No. 5, UMS-Wright Prep at No. 29, Spain Park at No. 79 and Thompson, who tied for No. 95.

Georgia’s Westminster Wildcats won the MaxPreps Cup as the best all-around athletics program after they racked up 2,380 points. Westminster won two championships in the fall and winter and six in the spring to go along with two spring state runners-up.

The Wildcats also had teams nationally ranked in girls’ soccer (No. 3) and boys’ golf (No. 6). They were the second team from Atlanta to win the cup in as many years.

“Not all sports fielded by a state are included in the MaxPreps Cup standings. A sport must be contested in 10 states in order for it to be a scoring sport in the MaxPreps Cup standings,” Kevin Askeland wrote in the release.
