Bay Minette Police Chief Al Tolbert resigned from his position on Monday, effective immediately.
Tolbert's resignation comes as new leadership takes over. On the same day, Joshua Brown was sworn in as Bay Minette's new mayor, where it was also announced that Jimmy Stacener will serve as interim police chief.
In his letter of resignation, Tolbert said after "discussions regarding the city's leadership and direction" he decided it was "appropriate" to step down to "allow for a smooth transition under the new administration." He said he is proud of what the police department achieved under his tenure.
"Together, we have strengthened community partnerships, enhanced departmental professionalism and continued to build a department our citizens can take pride in," Tolbert said.
"This decision was made after thoughtful consideration, and I remain fully committed to supporting a professional and seamless transition of leadership."
Prior to his resignation, Tolbert served as the city's police chief since 2017, having been appointed after a lengthy application process by Bay Minette's previous mayor, Bob Wills. He worked with the Bay Minette Police Department since 2000, along with working with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office in numerous roles.
