Four local wrestlers were recently honored with an All-American honor from the National Wrestling Coaches Association and United States Marine Corps.

Seniors William Rainer (Bayshore Christian), Charlie Hollis (Gulf Shores) and David Latimer (Robertsdale) as well as junior Ben Shaw (Fairhope) were all recognized with the Leadership & Character All-American Award and were among 26 Alabama representatives.

On the certificate it says, “The National Wrestling Coaches Association has proudly partnered with the United States Marine Corps to recognize your wrestlers’ excellence both on and off the mat with the ‘Leadership & Character All-American Award.’ The criteria for this award are: Dependability – Judgement – Endurance – Initiative – Tact – Integrity – Unselfishness – Loyalty – Courage.”

On the mat, all three seniors were state qualifiers this season although Shaw went to state as a sophomore.

Rainer finished third in Class 1-4A’s 220-pound weight class, Hollis took bronze in Class 5-6A’s 220-pound class and Latimer earned fifth in Class 5-6A’s 170-pound class. Shaw bowed out in the consolidation semifinals of the Class 7A South Super Sectionals in the 145-pound class but was named to the all-county team.
