Gulf Coast Media’s Athlete of the Week (Sept. 21-Sept. 27): Elberta’s Seamus “Moose” Owens

With his nickname of “Moose,” Elberta’s Seamus Owens owns one of the more unique monikers in high school athletics.

And last Friday, opposing defenders from Chickasaw likely felt like they were trying to tackle a one-ton mammal, because Owens put his team on his back to will it to its first win of the season.

The senior signal-caller ran the ball 34 times for 190 yards (good for 5.6 yards per carry), added a 60-yard completion and found the end zone a whopping five times during the dominant victory.

Thus, it’s safe to say “Moose” was running wild, and Owen’s efforts earned him Gulf Coast Media’s latest Athlete of the Week honor after public voting concluded Tuesday evening.

It’s been a challenging season for the Warriors, but Owens and his teammates have stayed the course, and they were rewarded with the first victory of the Joel Williams era last week.

Owens and the Warriors (1-5, 0-3) will look to build off their momentum when they battle Saraland at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Our other nominees for the week include Orange Beach running back/linebacker Cal Creel, Gulf Shores runner Nolan Langley and St. Michael running back Nygel Mitchell.

And be sure to check back here Monday at noon to cast your vote in GCM’s next Athlete of the Week ballot!
