Win a trip to Hawaii at Smoke on the Water at the Flora-Bama Yacht Club Aug. 17

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – This weekend winning a seven-day, six-night stay in Hawaii could be as simple as wearing a grass skirt, a flowered cabana shirt or a lei.

And it’s a big party. The Flora-Bama Yacht Club will be the scene of Sam Glass’ Third Annual Smoke on the Water all-day party featuring live music from as many as eight bands including the hosts, the Sam Glass Band.

“The Sam Glass Smoke on the Water celebration with Shawna P. at the Yacht Club,” co-owner and Flora-Bama Marketing Director Pat McClellan said.

Beside the all-day music, there will be a bikini contest at 4 p.m. and a special island menu for the day.

The Honky Tonk Beachgrass sound of the BeachBilly’s featuring T-Bone Montgomery, Mark Sherrill, Dave Caluger and Shane Lamar will start the show. Shawna P. and the Earthfunk Tribe will go on at 8 p.m. followed by the Newbury Syndicate closing the evening beginning at 10 p.m.

In between - the details are still being worked out on the exact lineup - will be Sam Glass with Daniel Moseley and Johnny Mullen joining him, the awesome blues sound of Lee Yankie and the Hellz Yeah, the Brian Hill Band, Jason Justice and his band belting out country with an edge including Billy Joe Shaver covers, Reed Lightfoot, Ben Stack, and the Jay Williams Band.

Anybody showing up with any Hawaiian clothing will be given a raffle ticket for the vacation drawing. Purchasing a lei from the Wonderful Wacky Women’s ovarian cancer fundraising group will also get you an entry into the raffle.

“And if you buy a souvenir T-shirt from the Chamber of Commerce, you get a raffle ticket,” Flora-Bama Events Coordinator Angela Houghton said. “The drawing will be at 8 p.m. and you must be present to win.”

The winner will get a buy one get one free deal on the airline ticket, but the rest of the trip is paid for.

“Buy one airline ticket and the two of you get all the hotels paid for for six nights,” Glass said. “It’s  a good prize. You can buy as many leis as you want to have tickets in the drawing.”

The first year of Smoke on the Water was a few feet west at Happy Harbor on the line and was first billed as a birthday celebration for Glass. He has since decided to stop counting birthdays so the birthday label was discontinued.

“We wanted to have a spot for Sam’s birthday so we built a Yacht Club around it,” a laughing McClellan said, obviously ribbing his old friend. “We have the Yacht Club just to be there or Sam’s birthday. We put up a stage for him and everything.”

The Flora-Bama staff is currently recruiting contestants for a bikini contest as well. There will more than $1,000 of cash and merchandise up for grabs in that competition. Sophie’s Swimwear has made donations to give away to winning contestants. Registration starts at noon.

The winner Saturday is automatically qualified for the Miss Flora-Bama Contest Finale on Aug. 31 with a top prize of $5,000.

Last year’s party was at a ramshackle bar thrown together owned by the Flora-Bama formerly known as “Boy’s Town” but rechristened the Flora-Bama Yacht Club. In years past it was a place where people who sang and worked at the Flora-Bama lived. And at least one still does.

“I used to live there,” Glass said. “We had about five sailboats and 15 campers and tents. I lived down there for about three and a half years. Musicians, songwriters and we had a couple of artists who went around here and drew pictures for customers. It was kind of like a little artist commune, hippie commune there.”

The current Yacht Club structure was built around the hangout spot for the residents of Boy’s Town

“It was a porch that you could come and hang out on and now that’s the actual bar,” Houghton said.

“Now it’s part of the restaurant,” Glass said. “We didn’t live in there. That was the bathhouse. And we had a place to store stuff. That porch is still there, they just built the roof over it.”

Executive Chef Chris Sherrill will provide a special menu that will include Island Mahi Po Boy, Aloha Pork Sandwich, Honolulu Kabobs, South Pacific Chicken Sandwich and Lani Sweet Chili Ribs. Other side items will also be available.

Houghton said this is the continuation of a summer that has seen celebrations every weekend and will continue to do so with the Bulls on the Beach returning to the coast with the Flora-Bama as the host as well as Oktoberfest and lots of other celebrations in between.

Some of the fall’s upcoming events are the Howl at the Almost Full Moon Local's Appreciation Toga Party on Sept. 15, Oktoberfest, the Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival No. 7-17 and the Thanksgiving potluck dinner.
