Who’s heating up: St. Michael’s Brent Acker and Spanish Fort girls golf

Posted

Another week deeper into Alabama's spring postseason means the margin for error is shrinking, and Baldwin County's remaining contenders are beginning to separate themselves from the pack.

This edition of Baldwin County Buzz heads to the Eastern Shore, where one St. Michael standout is rewriting school records across multiple sports while Spanish Fort's girls golf team is once again putting itself in position to chase history.

BRENT ACKER, ST. MICHAEL TRACK & FIELD

St. Michael's Brent Acker has spent this spring proving there may not be a bigger two-sport athlete in Baldwin County. After helping power the Cardinals' soccer team to a berth in the 5A Final Four, the senior transitioned to the track and immediately delivered one of the most impressive performances in the state.

Acker captured the 4A state championship in the 400-meter, then added a silver medal in the 200-meter and bronze in the 100-meter to cap an unbelievable first season with the Cardinals' track program after putting on the spikes just a few months ago.

In just the past month, he has set St. Michael's school records in all three sprint events, posting times of 10.81 in the 100-meter, 22.06 in the 200-meter and his state-title-winning mark in the 400 of 48.55.

His impact on the soccer field has been just as significant as Acker has scored 21 goals and dished out 12 assists this season while serving as one of the Cardinals' top attacking threats during their postseason run to this point. He and his Cardinal teammates will look to play one more match on the pitch after taking on Indian Springs in the semis.

SPANISH FORT GIRLS GOLF

Spanish Fort's girls golf team keeps stacking accomplishments in Northern Baldwin County, but the biggest one remains just ahead.

The Toros followed up their area championship from last week by claiming the Class 6A South Sub-State title in dominant fashion, carding a team score of 218 to finish 11 shots ahead of the runner-ups.

Sara Carter Hare led the charge with a low-medalist score of 68 as well. She could be the program's first individual state champion since Caroline Beebe won the title in 2008.

Even though the success has come in bunches over the years, the Toros have finished as 6A state runners-up three consecutive seasons. A state title this spring would deliver the first girls golf championship in school history and make Spanish Fort the highest-classification golf champion Baldwin County has produced.
