Who’s heating up: Spanish Fort’s Holland Burkhalter and Daphne baseball

Posted

We've reached the midpoint of the spring sports season, where postseason positioning starts to take shape — and with it comes a clearer picture of who's heating up across Baldwin County.

This week's spotlight highlights a record-chasing goalkeeper on the Eastern Shore and a red-hot baseball team finding its stride on the diamond.

HOLLAND BURKHALTER, SPANISH FORT GIRLS SOCCER

Spanish Fort senior goalkeeper Holland Burkhalter continued her standout season with two 10-0 shutouts last week, bringing her total to 10 on the year.

Burkhalter recorded her 50th career shutout this past week — third-most in AHSAA history — and is now eight clean sheets away from another milestone. With three regular-season matches remaining and a potential deep postseason run ahead, she could climb further up the all-time list to second place while also approaching her personal single-season best of 19 shutouts set back in 2023.

As a team captain, Burkhalter has anchored the Toros from inside the net that has outscored opponents 74-12 this season.

Spanish Fort sits at 16-2-2 and is ranked among the top teams in Class 6A. Burkhalter will look to continue her success for the Toros with the postseason looming, coming up short in the semifinals in 2025 to eventual 6A champions Briarwood Christian.

DAPHNE BASEBALL

Just like it was all Foley last week, it's all Eastern Shore this week. Daphne baseball extended its winning streak to four games with a 3-0 week, including two wins over Baker and another against MGM.

The Trojans have outscored opponents 47-12 during the streak, tallying 52 hits — 17 of which have gone for extra bases. Making the run even better, the first win in their four-game win streak came against rival Spanish Fort in a rubber match for the series.

After opening the season 1-6, Daphne has flipped the script, going 11-3 since and winning nine of its last 10 games.

The roster features several players recognized by Prep Baseball Report and Perfect Game, evaluations often used for elite level talent comparable to three- to five-star rankings seen in other sports. The Trojans will look to ride that roster back to the 7A state playoffs, where they will aim to make it out of the opening round for the first time since 2021 and win their first Blue Map trophy since going back-to-back in 2001-02.
