Who’s heating up: South Baldwin Christian Academy’s Gunnar Gaskin and Daphne wrestling

Posted

Baldwin County's top athletes and teams continue to raise expectations each and every week as Gulf Coast Media's Baldwin County Buzz rolls on with another look at who's heating up across the county.

This week, the light shines on South Baldwin Christian Academy basketball's high-scoring sophomore Gunnar Gaskin and the Daphne wrestling program after a dominant showing at the South Sectionals.

Gunnar Gaskin, SBCA basketball

Gunnar Gaskin has been on a tear for the South Baldwin Christian Academy Knights, putting together his strongest stretch of the season at the perfect time as the postseason nears.

Over the past three games, the sophomore has combined for 79 points and 31 rebounds, helping lead the Knights to key wins over East Hill and Lighthouse Baptist. While SBCA statistics aren't listed alongside other Alabama schools on MaxPreps due to the Knights competing in Florida's Panhandle Christian Conference, Gaskin's 21-point scoring average would rank among the state's top 20 scorers.

Despite a 6-14 record, the Knights have won three out of their last four, including the 49-43 win over Lighthouse Baptist Christian in which Gaskin led the team with 32 points and 11 rebounds. SBCA will look to carry that momentum into the Panhandle Christian Conference playoffs on Friday, Feb. 13, where they'll take on Lighthouse Baptist again in a play-in round. The Knights are seeking their first playoff victory in the short history of the program.

Daphne High School wrestling

Daphne wrestling delivered another statement on the mats last week, sweeping multiple team honors at the Super South Sectionals. The Trojans captured sectional titles in the Class 7A boys division, overall South boys standings, and overall South girls standings, continuing to separate themselves as one of Alabama's premier wrestling programs.

Daphne also produced four individual South Sectional champions, the most of any school in the county, accounting for four of the 11 total sectional champions across Baldwin County. In addition, 18 Daphne wrestlers qualified for the upcoming state meet, also the highest total in Baldwin County. The Trojans now turn their attention toward another potential championship run after finishing as state runners-up in 2025.

These weekly honors are an opinion based on stats from week to week performances; there is no official voting process or criteria.
