Who’s heating up: Gulf Shores’ Hayden Cook and Fairhope boy’s basketball

Posted

Baldwin County’s top athletes continue to raise the bar as Gulf Coast Media’s Baldwin County Buzz rolls on with another look at who’s heating up across spring sports.

This week’s spotlight shines on Gulf Shores wrestling standout Hayden Cook and the red-hot Fairhope boys basketball team.

HAYDEN COOK, GULF SHORES WRESTLING

Cook, a senior at Gulf Shores High School, continues to cement his legacy as one of the county’s most accomplished wrestlers. He recently helped lead the Dolphins to a second-place finish at the AHSAA State Duals and was voted Baldwin County’s Most Outstanding Wrestler by area coaches.

Individually, Cook is nearing another milestone, sitting just five wins shy of 200 career victories at the high school level. He is currently ranked No. 2 in the state in the Class 6A 144-pound weight class and balances his success on the mat with excellence in the classroom as a member of the National Honor Society. Cook is also committed to wrestle collegiately at Division II program Minot State with plans to enroll in August.

FAIRHOPE BOYS BASKETBALL

On the hardwood, Fairhope boys basketball is in the middle of a dominant stretch, winning nine consecutive games to improve to 18-5 overall. The Pirates finished 6-0 in Class 7A Region 2 play after a 74-50 win over Robertsdale Tuesday.

Fairhope picked up three wins over the past week, including a 72-34 blowout of Faith Academy, a 72-68 victory over rivals Daphne and the win over the Golden Bears. During this current winning streak, the Pirates are averaging 72 points per game with an average margin of victory of 23.5 points. The surge has vaulted Fairhope to No. 16 in the MaxPreps Alabama rankings, No. 8 in Class 7A and No. 1 in the Mobile region as the postseason approaches.
