Baldwin County's top athletes and teams continue to raise the bar as Gulf Coast Media's Baldwin County Buzz rolls on with another look at who's heating up across the county.
This week's spotlight shines on Gulf Shores junior football and indoor track star Carter Davis, and the Orange Beach girls basketball team.
Carter Davis, Gulf Shores football/indoor track
Davis has put together a legacy-defining stretch on the track late in the indoor season. He first set a new school record in the 60-meter dash with a winning time of 6.80 seconds at the Last Chance Track Meet at Birmingham's CrossPlex, giving him momentum heading into the AHSAA state meet.
The Gulf Shores athlete followed that by raising the bar, breaking his own record while also setting a new AHSAA indoor state record in the event. Davis' time of 6.76 seconds ranks as the seventh-fastest 60-meter mark in the nation this season, cementing his status among the elite high school sprinters in the country. Behind performances like Davis', the Gulf Shores boys indoor track team finished 11th in Class 6A, tied for the second-best showing by a Baldwin County school.
Davis' athletic success extends beyond the track, as he's also a dynamic playmaker for the Dolphins football team. He is currently rated as a three-star prospect in the Class of 2027 and has already drawn significant interest from Power Four programs. With college football staffs reshuffled following a busy offseason of coaching changes, multiple SEC coaches visited Gulf Shores last week to check in on Davis and reaffirm his interest in their offers early in the recruiting cycle.
Orange Beach girls basketball
Orange Beach girls basketball earned Team of the Week honors after closing Class 4A Area 1 play on a high note.
The Makos secured the right to host the upcoming area tournament with a statement win over St. Michael, handing the Cardinals just their fourth loss of the season. Orange Beach finished 3-1 in area play, claiming the program's first-ever regular-season area championship. The 4A Area 1 tournament will begin on Feb. 7.
Orange Beach finished the regular season 13-17 overall, winning six out of the last eight games. Over the past week, the Makos picked up wins against Mobile Christian sand St. Michael before falling to St. Paul's in the final game of the year. Additionally, head coach Mike Chase recently reached 600 career victories, being honored by the Makos in a recent game.
