Walking for a cure

Matt Gregory of Bellingham, Wash., hit the road walking last August in an attempt to walk from his home to Miami in 365 days to raise money for cancer research. The young man, who passed through Robertsdale on his way to Pensacola, said his mother, Carolyn, was diagnosed with leukemia when she was pregnant with him. Because of the care she received at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, he said she lived for another 20 years, dying of melanoma in 1999. Although the 27-year-old hiker camped some of the time, he said people along the way have been very helpful and generous. Some have taken him into their homes to sleep, eat and bathe and many have called friends or relatives along his route so they too could help. By July 12, he had reached Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.
