Vote for Gulf Coast Media’s Athlete of the Week: Sept. 14-Sept. 20

As the weather finally seems to be cooling down, Gulf Coast Media’s next Athlete of the Week poll is currently live on our website.

Four athletes from Baldwin County will be included in the voting each week, which will open at noon on Mondays and close at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Individuals can only vote for their chosen athlete once, with the winner being announced on GCM’s website and social media pages soon after polling concludes.

This week, we have a record-setting volleyball player and three standouts from the gridiron making up the list of candidates.

Starting us off, Foley’s Judah Spencer torched the Baker secondary throughout Friday evening, and the Lions needed all of his 400 passing yards and five touchdowns to beat the Hornets, 48-45. The 6-foot-6 quarterback also notably came up with the game-winning play when he dove for the pylon in the closing moments of the contest.

“I rolled out after they bit on my play action, and Jaxson [Dixon] did a great job of taking the defensive back with the whip route,” Spencer said of the winning score. “I had the pylon, went for it and got the touchdown.”

Meanwhile, St. Michael’s Braedyn Walton continued his stellar junior campaign by racking up 178 receiving yards and a trio of touchdowns during his team’s 39-35 victory over St. Paul’s. Having already shown out with over 100 yards in the ESPN-televised opener against Battle Ground, Walton hauled in all 12 of his targets in this game.

Elsewhere, Spanish Fort’s volleyball team now boasts a mind-boggling 41-1 overall record as one of the top squads in the state, and senior Cailyn Boykin is a major reason why.

The daughter of head coach Gretchin Boykin, Cailyn reached the 4,000-assist mark in her career during the Lady Toros’ Tuesday games against Foley and Baldwin County. The veteran setter totaled a dozen kills, 12 aces, 45 digs and 288 assists last week, and she already earned American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Week honors in late August.

And lastly, Gulf Shores’ Jackson Serman acted as a one-man wrecking crew for the Dolphins’ defense during its 54-0 win over Murphy on Friday. The senior defensive end/linebacker tallied a team-high six total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks as Gulf Shores remained undefeated.
