Vote for Athlete of the Week: Aug. 24-Aug. 30

As the calendar prepares to flip to September, Gulf Coast Media’s next Athlete of the Week poll is currently live on our website.

Four athletes from Baldwin County will be included in the voting each week, which will open at noon on Mondays and close at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Individuals can only vote for their chosen athlete once, with the winner being announced on GCM’s website and social media pages soon after polling concludes.

This week, we have three gridiron standouts and one record-setting volleyball player making up the list of candidates.

Gulf Shores’ Gabriel Ervin was a one-man wrecking crew during his team’s 34-10 win over St. Paul’s on Friday, as he accounted for five total tackles, two tackles for loss and a pair of fumble recoveries.

Most notably, the junior also managed to scoop up one of those turnovers and hustle downfield for a 79-yard big-man touchdown.

Meanwhile, Fairhope’s Nic Ronsisvalle put the Pirates on his back late in their 33-21 win over Baldwin County. The bruising runner accounted for over 100 total yards and scored all three of his touchdowns during the second half of his team’s rally.

Elsewhere, Bayside Academy’s Sophie Hester eclipsed the 1,000-assist mark in her career this past week, and the senior setter was honored with a commemorative ball during her team’s Thursday night clash with Spanish Fort. In addition, Hester helped legendary head coach Ann Schilling pass the 1,800-win mark in her career, which ranks her No. 1 among coaches nationwide.

And lastly, Daphne’s Christian Segar showed why he’s a current South Alabama commit, as he recorded both a passing and rushing touchdown while leading the Trojans to a 21-7 bounce-back win over Carver Montgomery.
