FAIRHOPE, Ala. — This year’s Veterans Day parade in Fairhope will have several new attractions and could be the largest in its four-year history, said parade organizer Joe Birindelli.
“We are very fortunate to have Ram Corps in this year’s parade, the spectacular drum and bugle corps from the University of Mobile,” he said. “For those who have not experienced Ram Corps, you will be moved when you hear their stirring music. They are guaranteed to give watchers goose bumps.”
Fairhope Middle School’s unicycle club will also be participating for the first time this year.
“This year we’re going to have more involvement from students,” said Birindelli, a decorated Vietnam veteran, who organized an educational presentation at Fairhope Middle School last week by veterans of every foreign war from World War II to the present.
He said that Fairhope Intermediate School will also have a float in the parade.
As in years past, the parade will include members of local veterans organizations, the Fairhope High School band, local scouts and some members of the Baldwin Pops band.
The parade began in July 2004 as a tribute to local National Guard soldiers returning from Iraq.
“All the people we talked with said how great it was and wouldn’t it be great to do a Veterans Day parade,” he said.
The first annual Fairhope Veterans Day parade was organized later that year.
“The public is encouraged to come out and demonstrate strong patriotism,” Birindelli said. “It’s a time for old-fashioned flag-waving. Veterans are encouraged to wear their uniforms or medals and join in.”
The parade is at 2 p.m.., Saturday, Nov. 10, and starts at the Civic Center on Section Street, turns west on Fairhope Avenue, south on Church Street, east on Morphy Avenue, and north on Section Street back to the Civic Center.
Participants are asked to line up in the Civic Center parking lot by 1 p.m.
