Three Eastern Shore programs punch Elite Eight tickets at state hoops tournament

Posted

As the Sweet Sixteen wraps up, three Baldwin County basketball teams are still dancing toward the Elite Eight, one win away from a state semifinal berth in Birmingham.

The quarterfinal matchups are set to begin Feb. 24.

TWO GROUPS OF PIRATES

Fresh off sweeping the Class 7A Area 2 titles, both Fairhope squads kept their postseason momentum rolling in the Sweet Sixteen. The Fairhope boys handled Mary G. Montgomery 68-47 in a decisive performance that set up a showdown with Davidson on Feb. 25 at 10:45a.m.

On the girls side, the Lady Pirates continued their historic season. After edging rival Daphne by a single point in the area championship, Fairhope delivered a comfortable 56-45 win over Baker in the Sweet Sixteen. The victory marked Fairhope's 28th of the season and secured the program's first ever Elite Eight appearance.

The Lady Pirates will face Alma Bryant in the next round — at 9 a.m. on Feb. 25 before the Fairhope boys take the floor.

BAYSIDE ACADEMY — AN EVERYTHING SCHOOL

At Bayside, deep postseason runs have become part of the school calendar. The basketball success now adds to a banner year for its athletic department, which also saw deep playoff pushes in football, volleyball and baseball in 2025.

The Admirals punched their Elite Eight ticket with a 43-40 win over Monroe County in the Sweet Sixteen, advancing to face Southside-Selma — the same program that faced Bayside for a trip to the state football championship in the fall.

Bayside, now 20-8, will meet Southside on Feb. 24 at 10:45 a.m. inside Garrett Coliseum.

ELIMINATIONS

Elsewhere in the county, postseason runs came to an end for several programs. After falling to Fairhope in the 7A area championships, both Daphne teams were eliminated in the Sweet Sixteen. The Trojan boys dropped a 64-50 decision to Davidson, while the girls fell 57-47 to Alma Bryant.

In Class 4A, Orange Beach saw both its boys and girls seasons conclude against Jackson. The boys were defeated 54-34 by the Aggies, and the girls were edged 48-42 in a tight one. The St. Michael Catholic boys also bowed out in the 4A Sweet Sixteen, falling 64-54 to New Brockton.
