FAIRHOPE, Ala. - The first Citrin Safety Foundation Stayin’ Alive Golf Tournament was held at Rock Creek Golf Club in Fairhope on June 22.
Over 80 golfers came out to play in the tournament which will benefit the foundation’s mission to bring the National Safety Council’s program, Alive at 25, to Baldwin and Mobile county high schools. Major sponsors of the event included the J. Rice Family, McConnell Automotive, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Thurber, III, NBC Securities, Inc., Freedom Court Reporting and Freedom Promotional Products. The Stapleton Catering team, comprised of Chad Stapleton, Reagan Scroggins, Reed Hawkins and Keith Phildius, won first place in the gross division.
Alive at 25 is an innovative program that bridges the gap between what teens learn in driver’s education class and the behaviors and skills that are needed to become responsible, accident-free drivers. Taught by instructors who have been certified by the National Safety Council, the course is delivered through interactive media segments, engaging discussions and activities, workbook exercises, recitation games and impromptu skits. Students are led to understand the consequences of their actions, and how to take control of situations which could potentially put themselves or others in danger
The Citrin Safety Foundation is also now placing emphasis on empowering teenage passengers to speak up when they feel their safety might become compromised by a distracted or reckless driver.
The foundation is currently developing a parent program, and hopes to eventually expand its educational reach to encompass all ages.
Since September, the non-profit organization has presented Alive at 25 to over 4,000 students.
“As we expand our reach into more schools and strive to promote heightened awareness about the dangers of electronic devices and other driving related issues, support from our communities is helping tremendously,” CSF Executive Director Pam Winstead said. “We are extremely grateful to the sponsors, players and volunteers who were all instrumental in making the Stayin Alive tournament a great success.”
