Spanish Fort volleyball added another puzzle piece to its dynasty last week by capturing its second-straight Class 6A state championship with a sweep of Hazel Green at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The Toros powered through the postseason without dropping a single set, mirroring last year's dominant title run. Before topping Hazel Green, Spanish Fort swept both Homewood and Saraland in the earlier rounds to complete another flawless 6A bracket performance.
After being recognized at the school's football pep rally on Friday following their return home Thursday night, head coach Gretchen Boykin commented on how the Toros have sustained success over the years.
"You have to give a lot of credit to the girls," Boykin said. "They play all year long, playing club volleyball. They're always striving and working to get better — they just hold themselves to a high expectation. I think we have gotten our program to a point where we expect to win. Everytime we hit the court, that is their expectation and we strive to be the best we can be."
Boykin is now a six-time state champion as the Toros head coach.
This year's championship marks the program's second-consecutive state crown and its third-straight season with more than 60 wins. The Toros have finished as the state's No. 2 team per MaxPreps for a second season in a row behind McGill-Toolen.
Although this is not the first time Spanish Fort has finished with 60 wins, the 60-8 record marked a program record in winning percentage at .882. Boykin talked about what makes this team and group of seniors so special.
"This is the group I have probably known the longest," Boykin said. "When I first started coaching at Spanish Fort, I coached a lot of them when they were about 10 or 11 years old. So this group is the one that I have grown up with — they have a special place in my heart because I really did know them when they were little kids."
Boykin guided the Toros to back-to-back championships with her daughter, Cailyn Boykin, playing a key role on both title teams.
"It's so fun," Boykin said. "Just getting to share that with her, it's a unique experience. It is ironic though. There are a lot of coaches right now with their daughters and all of them seem to be setters. But it's really neat for all of us. We are all so into the game of volleyball, getting to share that with your child and then to bring home the state championship makes it that much more special."
Spanish Fort's sweep headlined another strong showing for Baldwin County volleyball programs at the state tournaments. Bayside Academy competed in Class 7A and fell in the opening round to eventual runner-up Thompson. St. Michael Catholic lost to eventual 4A champion Cherokee County in the first round, while Orange Beach advanced to the semifinals after defeating West Morgan before bowing out to Cherokee County as well.
