SPANISH FORT — Behind two-touchdown efforts from seniors Nehemiah Hixon and EJ King, the Spanish Fort Toros moved to 2-0 within Class 6A Region 1 thanks to a 35-6 win over the Baldwin County Tigers.

Hixon helped set the tone with two receiving touchdowns in the first half on beautiful throws from junior quarterback Aaden Shamburger. King then helped seal the deal for Spanish Fort with a rushing touchdown as well as a jump pass touchdown to classmate Newton Gardner. Fellow senior running back Sawyer Wilson also registered a rushing touchdown.

Baldwin County got its lone score on a 3-yard run from senior Ti Mims to make the Tigers’ deficit to the Toros 21-6 with 6:58 left in the third quarter. Baldwin County fell to 0-2 in region play with another road trip to Theodore on next week’s docket.

Another fast score for the Toros

Once again, Spanish Fort scored early and often to get the wheels in motion.

The Toros drove their first possession into Baldwin County territory before Shamburger threw up a deep ball to Hixon down the sideline. With a leaping, one-handed grab, Hixon slid into the end zone to give Spanish Fort a 7-0 lead with 7:10 remaining in the first quarter.

The Toros also scored on their opening possession in Week 1, just two plays into the new season.

Baldwin County defense provides stops

Although Baldwin County slowed Spanish Fort’s penultimate drive of the second quarter with a sack from senior EJ Jones and an interception from Ty French, the Toros managed to find the end zone just before halftime.

Shamburger escaped the pocket and rolled away from the Tiger pressure before he delivered a high pass on the run. The ball led Hixon to the front corner of the end zone where the senior receiver made sure his two feet were in bounds before he fell to the ground with the catch in pay dirt.

King helps seal the deal

Spanish Fort mainly kept it on the ground to wind down another region win as King, a Faith Academy transfer, continued to make an impact on his new offense. The Toro running back recorded his second-straight 100-yard game where he’s scored at least one touchdown in each of the first three contests.

Spanish Fort improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Class 6A Region 1 with a road trip to Saraland on next week’s schedule. The Spartans similarly moved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in region with Friday’s 31-7 win over Gulf Shores.

Baldwin County fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in Class 6A Region 1 as the Tigers are set for a road trip to Theodore next week. The Bobcats similarly fell to 0-3 and 0-2 in region with an 18-16 loss to McGill-Toolen.
