FOLEY — Defending Class 6A state champion Spanish Fort is picking up right where they left off in 2024, sweeping Foley and Elberta in a tri-match Tuesday night at Foley High School to improve their 2025 record to 11-1.
The Toros relied on great team chemistry throughout the evening, using a balanced attack and strong serves to finish the day 2-0. Against both Foley and Elberta, Spanish Fort started fast with big leads in every set before finishing convincing wins.
Spanish Fort showcased the younger side of the team in the tri-match. Toros’ freshman setter Brooke Belarmino stood out in the opener against the Lions alongside senior Kennedy Helton and sophomore Miranda McEvoy on the backline. Sophomore Natalie Maxwell delivered in both matches, racking up kills and blocks to help pace the team.
Foley bounced back after falling to the Toros, taking down Elberta in three sets to finish 1-1 on the night. The Lions leaned on their front row for timely swings and capitalized on mistakes to put the Warriors away.
Seniors Ava Smith, Aubrey Holmes and Christiana Holmes dominated around the net for the Lions with several kills and great defense in the win against Elberta. Junior Emma Grace Marshall set teammates up in great spots all afternoon as well while seniors Jamaya Bronson and Ashanti Bell did a little bit of everything to secure a victory for Foley.
Elberta, though competitive in stretches, went 0-2 in the tri-match. The Warriors showed resilience with long rallies and scrappy defense but were unable to close out some tight sets late against the Lions.
All three programs will be back in action Aug. 29-30 at the Foley Event Center for the annual Labor Day Classic.
