ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — Record rainfall amounts for the summer of 2013 will certainly get an additional boost today. Streets and parking lots were flooding across Baldwin County by noontime. Rural roadways were underwater in many places, as a drenching storm system rolled through the region.
Numerous vehicles were submerged and motorists stranded, particularly in and around Fairhope. As of 3 p.m., Fairhope Police Department reported, "The water is slowly going down and most roads are passable at this time. Please keep in mind that more rain is expected this afternoon."
"Upper level disturbance," as it was described by NOAA/National Weather Service.
According to the Mobile-Pensacola National Weather Service office, the reporting site in Robertsdale recorded total June rainfall amounts of 18.95 inches. The 30-year average for June: 6.37 inches.
A soggy start to July had already dumped enough precipitation on Robertsdale to exceed this month's 30-year average of 8.14 inches. That was as of Tuesday, prior to today's deluge.
The city and state Health Department have issued notice after notice of repeated sewer overflows blamed on the high rainfall amounts over the past month.
