Silverhill to display national motto in council chambers

SILVERHILL, Ala. — The Town of Silverhill became the second municipality in Central Baldwin to approve displaying the words “In God We Trust” in its council chambers following a vote of the Silverhill Town Council Monday night.

The Silverhill Town Council voted at its regular council meeting to adopt Resolution 496-10-7-2013, spurred by a grassroots effort that has been taken on by a local resident.

The words “In God We Trust” have been used on U.S. currency since 1864. In 1956, they were adopted as our national motto.

“The same inspiring slogan is engraved above the entrance to the Senate Chamber as well as above the Speaker’s dais in the House of Representatives,” according to the resolution. “In both war and peace, those words have been a profound source of strength and guidance to many generations of Americans.

The slogan is already on display in the council chambers at Robertsdale City Hall after that city’s council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution to that effect in July.

Area resident Jon Butler made a presentation to the council at its July 1 meeting which was tabled for review by the city’s attorney to ensure there were no legal issues.

Butler told the Robertsdale City Council that the request is part of a grass-roots effort that began in California to add the words, which is the national motto, in meeting places at all levels of government.

“Through the years our nation is being separated further and further from God,” he said, “and we’re trying to do everything we can to honor God. This is the Bible Belt of Alabama. If they can do this in California, I see no reason why it can’t be done here.”

Butler said the idea has also been brought before and is being considered by the Foley City Council and plans are to bring the idea in front of all municipalities and the County Commission.

The Loxley Town Council will consider a resolution at its regular meeting Oct. 14 to add the slogan to its council chambers.

In other business Monday, the council tabled action to adopt the 2013-14 fiscal year budget and will continue to operate under the 2012-13 budget, which was adopted in October of last year.

Last year’s budget includes revenues and expenditures of around $1 million.

The council also agreed to sponsor the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce’s annual academic excellence banquet at a cost of $100 and the chamber’s annual prayer breakfast at a cost of $200.

The council also voted to approve a gold level sponsorship for Silverhill School’s accelerated reader program at a cost of $250.

It was also announced by Council member Jared Lyles that the Central Baldwin Baseball League will be taking over the concession stand at the town’s ballpark.
