Seven Baldwin County soccer programs ranked in top 10 of AHSAA coaches polls

Posted

Each week, prep boys' and girls' soccer coaches across Alabama submit top-10 ballots for their respective classifications in statewide rankings released by the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

The third rankings of the season feature seven Baldwin County programs across the boys and girls classifications. The next round of rankings will also introduce "Super Rankings," combining all classifications into a statewide top 10 for both boys and girls teams.

Here's a look at the local teams that landed in the latest polls, along with a few programs that noticeably missed the cut.

BOYS RANKINGS

On the boys side, the Foley Lions checked in at No. 8 in Class 7A. The Lions entered the week with the top record in Baldwin County after knocking off Gulf Shores. Foley later fell to the Daphne Trojans in penalty kicks but still holds a place among the state's top 7A programs.

Gulf Shores landed at No. 10 in Class 6A after the narrow loss to Foley, but the Dolphins bounced back with a win over the UMS-Wright Bulldogs and a draw with the Westminster School at Oak Mountain Knights. Playmaker Webb Ronan continues to pace the offense with the nation's fourth-most assists at 15, while Duhel Nathanel ranks among the state's top 20 goal scorers with 13.

The Orange Beach Makos came in at No. 3 in Class 4A. Much like the girls program, the Mako boys opened the season undefeated. Orange Beach could slip slightly in the next rankings after back-to-back losses, but the Makos still entered the week as one of the top teams in Class 4A with area play heating up.

With the county standings tightly packed on the boys side, several other teams are pushing toward the rankings. Most notable among those missing this week is the St. Michael Cardinals boys team in Class 5A, which has surged after starting the season 1-4-3.

The Cardinals won five games at the West Ala tournament and extended their streak to six with a win over John Carroll Catholic Cavaliers before eventually falling 5-4 to Enterprise High School. St. Michael sits at 7-5-3 and has gone toe-to-toe with ranked teams such as Foley and Gulf Shores — two of the Cardinals' three draws this season. Juniors Jake Lazzari and Raphael Duchesne both rank among the state's top 15 goal scorers with 28 combined goals.

Another team to watch is the Fairhope Pirates, which has won four straight matches to improve to 6-6. The Pirates opened the season with a 5-1 win over ranked Gulf Shores and could find themselves in the next Class 7A rankings with a matchup against ranked Foley on deck.

GIRLS RANKINGS

One of the biggest surprises from the latest poll is the absence of the Elberta Warriors. Elberta sits at 9-0 with wins over higher-classification opponents including Gulf Shores, Robertsdale and Foley. The Warriors also defeated the 1-3A's eighth-ranked Bayshore Christian Eagles 4-0 and have outscored opponents 52-4 this season.

With that being said, starting off the ranking is the Spanish Fort Toros checking in at No. 4 in Class 6A. The Lady Toros have not lost since a 2-1 defeat to the Davidson Warriors on Feb. 10 — their only loss of the season. Spanish Fort has since put together a five-game win streak with victories over Daphne and Saraland last week, extending its unbeaten run to nine matches.

The St. Michael Cardinals came in at No. 4 in Class 5A. The Lady Cardinals finished as the 2025 Class 5A runner-up in their first season in the classification and opened 2026 with similar expectations. St. Michael is 2-2-1 in its last five games and has a key area matchup with undefeated Elberta scheduled for March 12.

The Orange Beach Makos hold the No. 1 spot in Class 4A with a 7-0 record, are one of two undefeated teams in the county and currently hold the highest ranking locally. After another strong week that included a win over St. Luke's Episcopal, Orange Beach appears poised to hold that top ranking. A meeting with Elberta scheduled for April as well is already shaping up as one of the biggest local matches of the season.

Bayshore Christian rounds out the county's ranked girls teams at No. 8 in Classes 1A-3A. The Eagles fell 4-0 to Elberta last week but rebounded with a 6-0 win over the Satsuma Gators to move to 5-3-1.
