FOLEY, Ala. — The federal government’s sequester impact has made its way to the Foley Municipal Airport.
According to Foley City Administrator Mike Thompson, a reduction in the federal budget caused by the sequester has the city rebidding a renovation project that had been mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration.
“The airport and its runway currently does not meet FAA standards,” he said, explaining that the facility’s lone runway is simply too long.
So the FAA asked the city to remedy the situation.
“They gave us three alternatives,” Thompson said. “The alternative we settled on was to reduce the length of the runway on the south end.”
Once that was settled, the city solicited bids for the project.
“While the bid was out, the FAA came back out and said because of the sequester, we needed to reduce the project,” Thompson said.
That solution will consist of re-striping the runway and not removing any of the concrete currently on the field.
“It will save the FAA money,” Thompson said.
According to a published advertisement by the city, bids to repair will be taken through the end of July.
Foley Municipal Airport’s single runway allows traffic to both take off and land. According to Thompson, the traffic includes recreational pilots.
“We do have a good number of recreation folks that fly in and have a condo on the beach,” he said.
In addition, flight training for civilians and first-level Navy pilots is conducted at the airport.
