Bracket madness is coming to Baldwin County as Fairhope, Orange Beach and Bayside basketball all clinched area hosting rights ahead of the final week of regular season play.
Fairhope swept its regular-season area titles in 7A Area 2 with a pair of program defining seasons. The Fairhope girls improved to 25-4 overall with a 53-16 win over Robertsdale, finishing 5-1 in area play to clinch the regular-season championship and the right to host the area tournament. The Fairhope boys followed suit, improving to 20-5 on the season after edging Daphne 72-68 recently to secure hosting duties for the 7A Area 2l tournament.
Orange Beach also claimed a pair of area hosting spots in 4A Area 1 as the Makos' girls team is now 13-16 after a 43-31 win over St. Michael, a perennial 4A contender. Orange Beach finished 3-1 in area play and will host the area tournament. The Orange Beach boys continued their strong season, improving to 24-5 with a 38-36 victory over St. Michael to complete an unbeaten 4-0 run through area play and clinch hosting rights as well.
Bayside Academy's boys team earned postseason hosting privileges in 3A Region 1. The Admirals moved to 15-7 overall with a 51-38 win over Mobile Christian, finishing 3-1 in area play to secure an area host position.
Area brackets are set for this coming weekend, starting Feb. 6. Sub-regional tournaments are scheduled to begin Feb. 13 for girls and Feb. 14 for boys.
As for the other county teams that will open postseason play on the road — Daphne, Foley and Robertsdale — will compete in the 7A Area 2 Fairhope-hosted brackets, while both St. Michael teams will travel to Orange Beach for the 4A Area 1 tournaments. Bayside's girls will play in the Mobile Christian bracket.
Spanish Fort, Baldwin County and Gulf Shores teams will compete in brackets hosted by McGill-Toolen in 6A Area 2. Elberta's boys will play in the 5A Area 1 tournament at UMS-Wright, while the Elberta girls are slated for Williamson. Bayshore's boys team will open postseason play in the Chickasaw bracket for 2A Area 1.
