Primetime Primer: Gulf Shores welcomes Parklane Aca. for marquee out-of-state clash

Posted

Gulf Shores’ football program has recently adopted a social media slogan of #BallAtTheBeach, and after waiting 287 days since their previous season concluded, the Dolphins will finally live up to that mantra Friday night.

Mark Hudspeth’s team will welcome Parklane Academy to town for its season-opener, as the visiting Pioneers are making the lengthy journey from McComb, Mississippi, to compete in a marquee out-of-state clash.

With these programs having combined for three state titles since 2023 and there being familiarity between the coaching staffs, there are plenty of storylines to follow as Gulf Shores kicks off a highly anticipated campaign.

Here are the players to keep an eye on, keys to the game and other notes to know ahead of kickoff:

Players To Watch

Carter Davis

Gulf Shores | Wide Receiver | Senior

Notable Stats: 55 career catches, 931 receiving yards, 226 rushing yards, 16 total touchdowns

Having committed to further his career at West Virginia over the summer, Davis is now fully focused on guiding the Dolphins to new heights this fall.

A dynamic vertical threat with a 6-foot-2 frame, Davis will be used in a variety of ways within the Gulf Shores offense and should be at the top of every defense’s scouting report.

Elijah Malone

Gulf Shores | Cornerback | Senior

Notable Stats: 70 career tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss, 6 interceptions, 23 pass breakups

The Dolphins’ other D-I commit resides on the opposite side of the ball, as Malone has become a highly productive corner who should be able to lock down his side of the field this fall.

A future Jacksonville State Gamecock, Malone’s one-on-one battles with Davis during the offseason are a prime example of “iron sharpens iron.”

Jay Alldredge

Parklane Academy | Linebacker | Senior

Notable Stats: All-MAIS 4A, 1st Team All-District, Returning Tackles Leader

The Pioneers boast a plethora of veterans defensively, but Alldredge sets the tone in the middle of the unit.

An instinctive, physical tackler, Alldredge will be involved in nearly every play as he aims to disrupt Gulf Shores’ offensive rhythm.

The X-Factors

1. What will the Dolphins scheme up to rattle a sophomore quarterback?

After fielding senior quarterbacks in each of the past two seasons, Parklane will start a sophomore behind center this fall.

But Reece Robinson isn’t your typical underclassman, as he started for the Pioneers’ junior varsity squad as an eighth-grader and has been undergoing extensive quarterback training for years.

Still, having your first start be a road date with a program like Gulf Shores can be daunting. Ron Rushing and his staff will likely look to get Robinson into an early rhythm to settle him in, while the Dolphins will key in on rattling the youngster.

2. Can Parklane contain Gulf Shores’ dynamic athletes on the perimeter?

As mentioned prior, the Pioneers boast plenty of experience on their defense, but they rarely face the caliber of skill-position athletes that Gulf Shores will present.

Davis is the star of the show, but the Dolphins possess plenty of explosive options on the perimeter and in the backfield. As a result, Parklane will have to scheme up ways to limit the amount of open field Gulf Shores’ offense works with.

3. How will the Dolphins handle the pressure associated with this unique matchup?

Gulf Shores unveiled its new practice facility, athletic renovations and high school building in recent weeks, creating an extra layer of anticipation around the program.

Of course, now the expectation is for Hudspeth’s team to capitalize off that momentum by returning to prominence at the 5A level. And with a championship-caliber team visiting from out-of-state, the opener is a perfect opportunity to set the tone for this season.

Handling all of that pressure will be the Dolphins’ first challenge come Friday night.

Notes To Know

  • This will be the first meeting between Parklane and Gulf Shores in football. The matchup came about in part because of a friendship between Hudspeth and Pioneers assistant coach Paul Anderson, as the duo won a state title together in 1997 while coaching in Mississippi.
  • As mentioned, these teams have combined for a trio of state championships since the 2023 season. The Dolphins claimed the AHSAA 5A title in ’23, while Parklane earned the MAIS 5A crown in 2024 before securing the MAIS 4A D-II championship in 2025.
  • Gulf Shores has only played a team from Mississippi once before. The Dolphins hosted Richton in 2002, falling by a score of 31-0.
  • Former Gulf Shores kicker Taylor Barkley was on the 2023 State Championship team. His father, Jason, was on a title team at Parklane Academy in the past, and both will be present for the opening coin toss of this game.

Parker’s Perspective

Out-of-state matchups always bring with them plenty of storylines, and this meeting is no different. Both of these teams are treating this as a true tone-setting game, with the victor becoming confident that it can achieve all of its preseason goals.

Parklane made a point of playing a tougher, more diverse schedule this year, and the visitors will thus be looking to make a statement as an underdog. Given their championship pedigree and wealth of playing experience, the Pioneers are fully capable of springing the upset.

If Gulf Shores is to prevent such an outcome, it will look to lean on its superior depth and athleticism on the perimeter. Testing Parklane’s defensive backs with a combination of horizontal screens and vertical routes early on will reveal if they can hang with Davis and company, and success in that endeavor would open up the ground game.

And on the other side of the ball, how the Pioneers’ sophomore quarterback handles this stage will be a key, because the Dolphins will almost certainly test Robinson with plenty of exotic pressures and coverages.

All in all, as long as Gulf Shores can handle the emotions surrounding this opener and claim momentum early in the game, it should be able to start its 2026 campaign off with a quality result.

The Pioneers and Dolphins will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday.
